• Japan:
• 1852: President Fillmore encouraged
Japan to trade with the Unites States.
• Matthew Perry was sent to discuss a
trade agreement with Japan
• 1854: Japan opened trade with the
United States.
• 1890s: Japan begins to expand their
empire.

U. S. View of Hawaiians
Hawaii becomes a U. S. Protectorate (colony)
in 1849
by virtue of economic treaties.
Expansion
Hawaii:
• Used as a base between Japan and US
mainland.
• New England settlers settle in Hawaii and
discovered the climate and soil was conducive
to growing sugar cane.
• Senate insisted that the Hawaiians grant US
exclusive rights to a naval base.
