CELLS
Vocabulary
Cell – the basic unit of a living thing
 Bacterial Cell - a cell that does NOT have a
nucleus
 Chloroplast - Part of plant cell that makes food
(photosynthesis); NOT in animal cells
 Mitochondrion- The part of all cells that
provides energy!

ALL LIVING THINGS ARE COMPOSED OF
CELLS AND HAVE THE FOLLOWING
CHARACTERISTICS:
 Need
food and water
 Made up of one or many CELLS
 Move (or moving parts)
 Get rid of waste
 Grow
 Reproduce
Structure vs. Function?
Structure = the parts
 Function = the job they do

Cell Membrane: “The Bouncer”
FUNCTION: Controls what enters and
leaves
 Animals? YES;
Plants? YES

Cytoplasm: “The Dance Floor”
FUNCTION: Jelly that fills cell; where
chemical changes happen
 Animals? YES;
Plants? YES

Nucleus: “The Manager”
FUNCTION: Tells cell what to do
 Animals? YES;
Plants? YES

Genetic Material/DNA: “The Brain”
FUNCTION: Found in nucleus; tells cell
what to do
 Animals? YES;
Plants? YES

Mitochondrion: “The DJ”
FUNCTION: Gives the cell energy
 Animals? YES;
Plants? YES

Vacuoles: “The Bar”
FUNCTION: Store water for the cell
 Animals? YES;
Plants? YES

Cell Wall: “The Walls of our Club”
FUNCTION: Gives plant cell its SHAPE
 Animals? NO;
Plants? YES

Chloroplast: “The Chef”
FUNCTION: Where plants make food
 Animals? NO;
Plants? YES

Do All Cells Have a Nucleus?

NO! Bacterial cells do NOT have a nucleus!
