Who Were the Israelites? • About 1200 B.C., changes took place around the Mediterranean Sea. – Empires fell – New people entered the region – Set up new kingdoms • Around this same time, a group of people called Israelites built a kingdom in Canaan. The Israelites’ Beginnings • They had a small population, but their religion would go on the change most of the world. – They were monotheistic • There religion became known as Judaism. – People who practiced became known as Jews. Israelites’ Beliefs • They wrote down many of their beliefs in what would become the Hebrew Bible. – They wrote and spoke Hebrew • The Hebrew Bible tells us that they believed that they were descended from Abraham. – In return, Israelites believed the land of Canaan (Israel today) belonged to them forever. Moses and the Israelites • Israelites tell the story of the Egyptian pharoah enslaving Israelites. – One desperate mother put her baby in a basket and hid it in the riverbank – This baby was found by the pharaoh's daughter and named Moses. Moses Leads the Israelites to Freedom • Moses believed he heard the voice of God through a burning bush that told him to lead the Israelites to freedom. – The Bible says God sent the 10 plaques – The last plaque killed all first-born children, except those who marked their doorway with lamb’s blood • The Jews now celebrate a holiday called Passover Critical Thinking/Extended Response Question • Directions: Each response must be a minimum of 5 sentences. • 1.
