Functions of Skeletal System
2
1. Hemopoiesis – formation of red blood cells
in the diphysis of the long bones.
2. Mineral storage- Calcium, phosphorus, vit.d
3. Movement-with help from the use of our muscle.
4. Protection-of internal organs.
5. Support-framework for our body.

 Arthritis=
arthr/o -joint
itis - inflammation
Two kinds of Arthritis:
1. Osteoarthritis
2. Rheumatoid Arthritis

DISORDERS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM
5
 Arthritis

Osteoarthritis

Caused by aging, trauma, obesity,
family history

Bone hits bone

Symptoms: painful joints,
swelling, deformity of the joint.

Treatments: rest, exercise, antiinflammatory, surgery

DISORDERS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM
6
 Arthritis
 Rheumatoid arthritis
Caused by auto-immune
response. Mostly hands and feet.
Symptoms: stiffness,
swelling, deformities.
Treatment: Aspirin(ASA),
rest, ROM

DISORDERS OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM
7
 Gout

Metabolic disorder caused by
overproduction of uric acid.

Over ingestion of proteins/obesity

Painful/swelling in joint of large
toe.

Treatment: Dietary restrictions
on proteins, medications.

 Osteoporosis
 Caused by a metabolic disorder.
Low calcium intake

Mostly women

Decreased bone density

Treatment: Early prevention,
reg exercise, supplements


Pediatric condition(third
world countries)

Lack of vitamin D

Deformed, weak legs, bowing

Treatment: Dietary increase
of Vit.D, sunlight

SKELETAL SYSTEM TRAUMA
12

DISLOCATION VS. SUBLUXATION
 Subluxation occurs when the joint
only comes out of place partially and
goes back into place. move the affected
area to move it back into place. This is
less traumatic and lower in severity than
a dislocation.
 Dislocation happens when ball portion
of the joint comes out completely from
its socket. Usually requires surgery. This
is more severe, more painful and
requires more treatment than a
subluxation.

 A sprain is an injury to a ligament, the tough,
fibrous tissue that connects bones to other bone.
Ligament injuries involve a stretching or a tearing of
this tissue.
 A strain, on the other hand, is an injury to either a
muscle or a tendon, the tissue that connects muscles
to bones. Depending on the severity of the injury, a
strain may be a simple overstretch of the muscle or
tendon, or it can result in a partial or complete tear.
