The Greeks believed that gods and goddesses controlled nature and shaped their lives. Myths are traditional stories about gods and heroes. The Greeks built buildings as temples in cities to honor their gods. gods had special powers, but looked like humans. They married, played tricks, and had children. How did the gods influence the daily lives of regular people… Helen and Paris Helen was the daughter of Zeus She was the most beautiful woman in the world Her life was pretty normal until the gods interfered in the life of a man by the name of Paris. Paris Paris was tending his flock on Mount Ida and was asked to judge a beauty contest by Aphrodite, Hera and Athena (Zeus had been asked to judge but wisely refused) The winner, Aphrodite, promised Paris the most beautiful woman in the world… This would lead to the Trojan War, for when Paris met Helen, he believed that she rightly belonged to him. Sacrifices were normally either an animal or wine poured out to honor the god. However, legend has it, that there was an occasion in which the wind would not blow and the Greeks could not set sail. They wanted to go to Troy to take Helen from the Trojans. To get the wind to blow they offered a human sacrifice…King Agamemnon’s daughter. After she died the wind began to blow and they set sail for Troy. Greek Mythology in Today’s World Advertisement companies use the ideas that the Greeks had to advertise and sell their products. For Example Nike is a running shoe today, but remember what Nike used to be… Nike was a Greek God of triumph!! What now… Your mission is to create a slogan for a company. You are to use a Greek god or goddess as your theme for your slogan. For instance, if you choose to sell bottled water, you would choose to market your water using the god Poseidon. Or , if your were a book company, you might use Athena or her symbol of an owl to market your product. You will work in groups of four, but everyone must have a job!
