P2‐IC‐NLH‐16 NLH 2012 Capital Budget Application Page 1 of 1 1 Q. Re: Project B‐5 Unit 1 and Unit 2 Generator Stator Rewind 2 Will Units 1, 2 and 3 all be needed, for synchronous condensing capability, until 3 2041? 4 5 6 A. Yes, Holyrood Units 1, 2 and 3 available as synchronous condensers are integral 7 parts of the system reinforcements required to support the integration of the 8 Labrador – Island HVdc Link on the Island Interconnected System. The Holyrood 9 units operating in synchronous condenser mode provide necessary continuous 10 voltage control, reactive power supply, and inertia to assist in frequency control. As 11 such, the synchronous condenser capability of the Holyrood units will be required 12 throughout the life of the HVdc interconnection. Consequently, the Holyrood units 13 in synchronous condenser mode will be required beyond 2041.
