The Factory, The Cell The Factory I. The CEO A. Responsible for the work of the entire factory. B. Gives orders, makes sure everyone does there job. C. Keeps the factory running smoothly. The Cell II. The Nucleus A. Responsible for the function of the entire cell. B. Produces DNA C. Makes sure the cell runs smoothly. The Factory III. The Manager A. Takes orders from the CEO, gives them to the workers. B. Helps keep the factory running smoothly. The Cell IV. The Nucleolus A. Copies the DNA, changes it to RNA, sends it to the endoplasmic reticulum. B. Helps keep the cell running smoothly The Factory V. The Workers A. Work on the assembly line, put the product together. B. Take orders from the manager, work hard to do their job well. The Cell VI. Ribosomes A. Create amino acids to produce proteins. B. Take orders (RNA) from the nucleolus. The Factory VII. Assembly Line A. Where the workers work. B. Where the pieces of the product are put together. C. When the product leaves the line, it is nearly complete. The Cell VIII. Endoplasmic Reticulum A. Where the ribosomes are found B. Where amino acids are linked together to form proteins. C. As the proteins leave the ER, they are nearly complete. The Factory IX. Finishing Department A. After the product leaves the line, it goes to the finishing department. B. The product is cleaned, inspected, and wrapped for shipment. The Cell X. Golgi Apparatus A. After the proteins leave the ER, they go to the Golgi Apparatus. B. The proteins are cleaned of any remaining amino acids, wrapped in a membrane and prepared for shipment out of the cell. The Factory XI. Clean-up Crew A. Responsible for keeping the factory clean. B. They clean up spills, remove debris, keep factory running smoothly. C. Remove hazardous materials from the factory. The Cell XII. Lysosomes (animals), Vacuoles (plants) A. Responsible for keeping the cell clean. B. They digest bacteria, viruses, worn organelles. C. Remove toxic materials from the cell. The Factory XIII. Power Plant A. Power is supplied to the factory by any number of means. B. Some factories generate their own power, while others get energy from outside sources. The Cell XIV. Chloroplasts (plants), Mitochondria A. In plant cells, chloroplasts contain chlorophyll. B. Chlorophyll converts energy from the sun into into simple sugars through photosynthesis. C. Mitochondria convert the sugars into ATP. D. ATP is fuel for the cell The Factory XV. Factory Floor A. The factory floor is where the operations of the entire factory take place. B. Where to find workers, machines, materials and products moving from place to place. The Cell XVI. Cytoplasm A. Cytoplasm is the liquid that keeps the cell hydrated. B. Allows for the movement of organelles and proteins within the cell. The Factory XVII. Shipping & Receiving Department A. The receiving department brings the goods and materials necessary to make the product into the factory. B. Once the products are made, the shipping department sends them to stores all over the world. The Cell XVIII. Cell Membrane A. The cell membrane allows materials for nourishment and building proteins into the cell. B. The membrane sends completed proteins out of the cell for use all over the body. The Factory XIX. Factory Walls A. Factory walls provide structure and support B. Protect workers and machines from the elements The Cell XX. Cell Wall (plants) A. Only plants have cell walls. B. Provides structure and support for the cell, allowing plants to stay upright.
