Quick Facts About Dermatologists
1. Dermatologists are the most highly trained skin specialists in all of medicine.
2. They must have completed a four year medical degree, then a 4 year residency in dermatology
(thus they have completed usually 12 years of school).
3. The dermatology residency program is one of the most competitive positions in the medical
field, thus a dermatologist is most often one of the top students in the medical school
academically.
4. The training of dermatologist typically consists of hands on time in the clinic, academic lectures,
case presentations, research, skin surgery rotations and quite a bit of study time (as there are
over 2800 skin conditions).
5. Dermatologists are trained in most every aspect of the skin, hair and nails.
6. Requirements for mastery of topics include interpretation and diagnosis of skin diseases, the
pathology of skin diseases and also skin cancer.
7. A board examination is required to be certified as a dermatologist after completing residency.
This a comprehensive examination to ensure those who pass are proficient in dermatology care.
8. After completion of residency continuing education time is required each year as well as
periodic repeat board examinations and maintenance of certification requirements.
9. No other area of medicine is as highly trained in diagnosis and treatment of skin problems or
skin cancer.
