Personal statement for internal medicine
I am Shorooq Shwgi Banjar, 24 year old, graduated from King Abdul-Aziz University (KAU) – College
of Medicine, Class 2013. I was born in Makkah and raised in Jeddah with my family who inspired me
to be a good caring person. I was one of the excellent students during my years as a student. I
joined KAU College of Medicine and managed to achieve my degree with 4.79/5.00 GPA (first honor).
I first developed an insatiable curiosity for internal medicine when my sister was diagnosed with
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus while I was an undergraduate student. I saw her suffering for months
from her disease and I tried my best to support her. I observed the doctors who are taking care of
her, gave her their time and efforts to treat her probably. At that time, I started to read more about
her disease, why and how it happened, what is the best treatment to take and what is the side
effects of each medication. This interest led me to pursue an independent study in internal
medicine. I got excited to learn more about different diseases and the marriage between medicine
and the pathophysiology of each disease.
During my third year as medical student in problem based learning sessions I found the ability to
solve the cases related to internal medicine easily. I was looking for specialty that you can think
broad and taking every single details seriously, to connect between what you know and what the
patient had and to merge between other specialties to reach the diagnosis and approach the patient
appropriately. I followed through my interest in internal medicine by expanding my knowledge and
skills in taking history and examining the patient. I had several summer hospital training courses to
improve myself.
On my clinical years, several factors motivated me to choose a residency in Internal Medicine. During
my Internal Medicine clerkship, I experienced the intricate thought processes involved in treating
patients with multiple co-morbidities, as well as the energy and compassion needed to care for the
patient as a whole. I loved the challenge of being faced with a set of symptoms and identifying their
common etiology. My curiosity was certainly piqued; the more I learned, the more I wanted to learn.
The most gratifying part for me, however, was the interactions I had with my patients. Behind the
countless chief complaints presented to me were real people, each with a story that shaped who
they were and how they had come to that point in their lives.
I recognized the aspects of internal medicine that attract me: the importance of medical research in
improving the quantity and quality of life in patients of all ages; the scientific approach to daily
problems; and the advantage of a holistic and multi-disciplinary approach to patients.
During this same elective, I also witnessed the extent of emotional distress that cancer brings to
patients, their families, and friends.
As someone who has always been very goal-oriented, I am looking forward to beginning my
residency. My life to date has prepared me to deal with many obstacles and also has shown me the
determination, resilience, strength, and caring that are a part of my character. As I look toward my
future in internal medicine, I believe these characteristics will enable me to succeed and be a
valuable asset to the profession.
