March 2016: Laura Azzalina, Firstrust Bank President, Women’s Business Council 610-897-2637 • [email protected] Women’s History Month, celebrated in March, is an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. Dating back to 1911, this celebration recognizes and highlights leaders who struggled for equality- Susan B Anthony, Harriet Tubman and Alice Paul to name a few. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued a presidential proclamation which in part read “men and women have worked together to build this nation. Too often the women were unsung and sometimes their contribution went unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength and love of the women who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well.” Each year, the Women’s Business Council recognizes women whose contributions to our community have made a difference. The ATHENA Leadership Award was inspired by the goddess of Greek mythology known for their strength, courage, wisdom and enlightenment- qualities embodied in the Athena Leadership Model. The Athena Leadership Model captures these principles for use in contemporary settings, while acknowledging that they have been handed down from women across the world and over generations. We continue to honor and recognize these unsung heroes. Women who demonstrate eight distinct attributes that are reflective of their contributions to leadership: Authentic Self, Relationships, Giving Back, Collaboration, Courageous Acts, and learning, Fierce Advocacy, Celebration and Joy. Please consider nominating a special women for our 2016 Athena and Young Athena honoree.
