SPECIAL IDULFITRI SERMON (KHUTBAH):
“UNDERSTANDING, A COMPLEMENT TO IDULFITRI
CELEBRATION”
01 Syawal 1432H
30 August 2011M
Fellow congregants, Muslimin and Muslimat, May Allah’s blessings be on us,
On this victorious and blessed morning, let us together intensify our gratitude and
our submissions to Allah SWT in all earnestness – not just a submission per se but
a submission with a full responsibility in our adherence to Allah SWT commands
and to leave all His forbiddance, so that we will be loved by Him, get His
protection in the world and the Hereafter.Today, Mimbar will deliver a khutbah on
a topic entitled ”UNDERSTANDING, A COMPLEMENT TO IDULFITRI
CELEBRATION”.
1
Fellow Congregants, Muslimin and Muslimat,
Today, the coming of 1 th
Syawal is the moment for Muslims of all races and
ages all over the world to express takbir, tahmid and tasbih as a sign of praise of
Allah Sovereignty , a sign of successfully in controlling our nafs and repentance
that the bless month of Ramadhan has left us, and the sign of our gratitude to Allah
SWT that only with His blessings can we congregate here today.
The resonance in praise of Allah SWT has vibrated our souls, feelings
and thinking, as the celebration of Idulfitri set by our religion is begun with our
full submission to Allah, and hopefully the celebrations being held all over the
country are filled with healthy activities that are not contradicted with the
teachings of Islam and not contaminated the glow of Ramadhan. Idulfitri means a
celebration of victory in curbing lust and temptations and to enable us to return as
Allah’s godly devoted subjects and who conform to His rules, love al- Quran, love
our holy prophet SAW, mosques and understanding each other.
The prime strength of Idulfitri celebration is seen in the practice of
understanding. Understanding means the relationship among each other with the
purpose of understanding and respecting each other. Human beings are created by
Allah SWT with different characters and criteria. We are different in terms of
customs, cultures, life syles and religious practices. In order to ensure the smooth
of those variosity, each of us has to understand our own needs. Prior to Idulfitri
celebration, Muslims in droves return to their village via land, sea or air to be with
their family and close relatives to celebrate Idulfitri together. Muslims of all
background, status, political ideology, colour of skin and races with a spirit and
intention based on equality just for the unity of Muslims. Allah SWT has ordered
us to unite and rely on Islam as Allah’s decree in Surah Ali-Imran verse 103:
2
Interpreted to mean : “. And cling fast one and all to the bond of Allah (the
Religion of Islam), and do not draw apart from one another. And remember the
favours He has bestowed upon you: how He united your hearts when your were
enemies (during the age of Ignorance), so that you become as brothers (in Islam)
through His Grace; and how He delivered you from the abyss of Fire when you
were on the very brink of it (because of your unbelief during the age of Ignorance)
and He saved you from it. Thus Allah makes clear to you His Revelations, so that
you may be rightly guided.”
Fellow Congregants, Muslimin and Muslimat,
With the coming of Islam, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), has brought a unique
method in creating a united nation by preaching all Muslims to strengthen our
understanding. The Prophet (pbuh) has shown the way and method to perform the
duties towards religion, society and country by strengthening the understanding
and solidarity of people of all races, religions and descendents in Madinah. In the
Charter of Madinah, the Prophet (pbuh) has obliged all people in Madinah to love
and respect the land of Madinah. In the Charter, it is stated that anybody who
prefers in doing bad deeds which affect the unity among people in Madinah, he is
considered as a destroyer of the peaceful of Madinah. Abu Syufian, when he was a
special envoy of the Prophet (pbuh) had an audience with King Hercules in Persia.
King Hercules asked Abu Syufian what Muhammad’s (pbuh) instruction was, and
he answered, “ Pray to Allah SWT, the one and only God, don’t ally Allah with
anything, Islam, the religion of Allah is asking us to perform solat (prayers), be
honest and sincere and to leave bad deeds and to continue the bond of
relationship” (Muttafaq Alaihi) . According to explanation by Abu Syufian to non3
Muslim leaders, it was clear that understanding and respecting each other was a
basic requirement in handling social issues in a country.
The big question that arises is what is the main reason led to understanding
among us? Based on the observation of the Mimbar, the balance and unexcessive
attitude is the basic in instilling the mood of understanding. The unexcessive refers
to the wise implementation of something without harshness and cruelty on
human’s right and religion, and at the same time the religion becomes more
prestigious. Allah’s decree in Surah al-Baqarah verse 143:
Interpreted to mean:“ And thus (by guiding you to the right path), We have made
you (O followers of Muhammad) a chosen community justly balanced.”
Moderation or wasatiyyah that is practiced in Islam has its mission to find
the truth or al Haq. In finding truthfulness, we need to be moderate and have a
precise balancing in making Islam as the best religion in this country. This cannot
be achieved unless we obey what is contained in al Quran al Karim and the
Prophet’s Sunnah. Allah SWT has guided us in solving any disagreement in a
society or country as Allah SWT decrees in Surah an-Nisa verse 59:
Interpreted to mean: “O believers! Obey Allah, and obey The Messenger and
those entrusted with authority among you. Should you differ in anything among
yourselves, refer it to (the Book of) Allah (the Qur?an) and the (tradition of the)
Messenger, if you truly believe in Allah and the Last Day. This will be best (for
you) and best in the end..”
Mimbar wants to remind all not to go beyond the limits in whatever that has
been agreed among all. Racism and ideology are the causes of disunity and its
weakens the stability of social and politics of the country.
4
Fellow Congregants, Muslimin and Muslimat,
Understanding is the soul of Islamic strength as it creates love, relationship, peace
in family ties and society, and also helping each other. It is a pleasure that can
strengthen our relationship and spirit for us to be together to flourish the society
and country. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said:
Interpreted to mean: “ And my life is in His hand, you will not enter the Paradise
until you have faith and you won’t have faith until you love each other,do you like
if I show you something that if you do, you will love and be loved, it is giving salam
among you.” (Documented by Muslim)
Fellow Congregants, Muslimin and Muslimat,
While we are joyously celebrating Idulfitri, we must be aware that there are some
relatives, neighbours, friends and acquaintances and Muslim brothers and sisters of
ours who can hardly celebrate Idulfitri like we do, as their relationship is severed
from relatives. They are paupers, abandoned children and those who are at
Rehabilitation Centres, old folks’ homes, orphanages, welfare homes and others.
Therefore, Mimbar appeals us to celebrate Idulfitri lively by paying visits,
especially our parents, by asking forgiveness on our wrong doings, injustice and
other sinful deeds which we did directly or indirectly. By doing that, we would feel
peace and happy. The Prophet (pbuh) said:
5
Interpreted to mean: “Three good deeds for Allah SWT; Should you forgive
people who do bad to you. Should you help people who do not help you anymore.
Should you be with people who do not want to be with you.” (Documented by alKhattib)
In line with the light of Ramadhan which offers abig avenue to strengthen
our understanding, Mimbar would like to take this opportunity to remind us to
maintain and strengthen our relatioship by respecting each other, tolerate, moderate
in any action, do not excessive, forgive and be forgiven, and pray for the bond of
relationship among each other. Take the good and leave the bad. Remember all
Muslims that our good deeds will not be accepted by Allah SWT if we are selfish
and do not respect other’s right. Grab this opportunity on this noble day for us to
understand each other. By this way, hopefully our lives and country will be blessed
and in peace always. Let us ponder deeply the decree of Allah SWT in Surah alHujuraat verse 10:
Interpreted to mean: “Truly the believers are brothers. Make peace among your
brothers (who are fighting); and remain conscious of Allah, so that you may be
shown mercy. ”
6
SECOND IDULFITRI SERMON (KHUTBAH)
Fellow congregants, Muslimin and Muslimat,
Let us on this joyous day express our gratitude for the pleasure of faith and Islam
society, unity and strength in facing enemies. Celebrating Idulfitri is to celebrate our
success in fasting in the month of Ramadhan. Jihad in fighting our passion should be
continued in this Syawal by performing six days fasting which can be done
continuously or alternately. The Prophet (pbuh) said in his hadith:
Interpreted to mean:“ anyone who fasts during Ramadhan and follows by six
days fasting in Syawal as if he fasts for a year”.(Documented by Muslim)
In conjunction with the 54th National Day celebration on 31st August,
Mimbar reminds us to express our gratitude to Allah SWT, our leaders and persons
who fought for independence for all their sacrifices which led to a peace and
harmony country and so that we can celebrate Idulfitri peacefully today. Idulfitri is
also a peaceful day for families and relationship with relatives. Muslims of all
places are happy, they shake hands and seek for forgiveness as a sign of
relationship.
Fellow Congregants, Muslimin and Muslimat,
Once again, Mimbar reminds us that understanding, a complement to Idulfitri.
Paying zakat in the month of Ramadhan gives happiness to the poor and needy to
celebrate Idulfitri, the light of Ramadhan also reminds us that the principle of
7
understanding which is set by Islam has no boundary. Muslims are same, wherever
they are in terms of food and drink, rules and theology. Muslims’ life is special
with the faith to Allah SWT.
We should realize that our relatives in other countries live in difficulties for
the whole life, grown up in wars, generation by generation is suffered in their lives
especially our brothers in Palestine and other Islamic countries. Based on the
observation of Mimbar, there are Muslim minorities in many countries especially
in this region, undergoing difficulties in their lives. Mimbar would like to draw
your attention and would ask you to visualise how Muslims in countries at war and
experiencing extreme poverty observe the fasting month and celebrate Idulfitri. In
the spirit of understanding, Mimbar appeals to today’s congregants, muslimin and
muslimat to give aids to our hard core poor brothers and sisters in Islam who are
now living in extreme hardships.
The light of Ramadhan reminds us to extend help, a programme being
organised from time to time in mosques, media, etc. With Allah SWT’s grace, our
sustenance will increase, our life will be longer and our love towards our
communities will be better.
Fellow Congregants, Muslimin and Muslimat,
Today, let us increase our expressions of salawat and salam to the Holy Prophet
Muhammad (pbuh) for propagating Islam through many sacrifices and jihad and
over time, it has become the religion of the country. Our show of love is expressed
in our salawat and salam as Allah SWT’s decree in Surah al-Ahzab verse 56:
8
Interpreted to mean: “Truly Allah and His angles shower blessings on the
Prophet (giving him honour and graces). O Believers! Bless him and greet him
with a worthy salutation.”
