REPORT ON INDUSTRIAL VISIT to 230/110 KV
SINGAPERUMALKOIL SUBSTATION
Date of Visit : 04-03-2015
41 students of III year EEE and II year MECT were part of the Industrial visit(IV) to 230/110
kvSingaperumalKoil Substation on 04-03-2015.
This substation receives power from different power plants in Tamilnadu. It has three 230 kv and
three 110 kv bus. The briefing was given by Additional Executive Engineer (AEE)Mr.Nagarajan.
The main components of the substation are
Transmission line: Used for transmitting high voltage and high frequency signals.
Wave trapper: Used for trapping the high frequency (audio signals) and allows only law
frequency signals to pass through it. This devise is used to send audio signals and hence act
as a separate communication channel.
Current transformer: Used for measuring the line current. It has the relay connected to it
which is used to protect the line from high current(1200A/1A). If current exceeds the limit it
sends the signal to the circuit breaker to trip the line.
Isolator: Used as protecting switch for circuit breakers as they are heavy n costly
equipment’s.
Circuit breakers: These are the switches for tripping the line during fault conditions when
high current flows suddenly. It uses SF6 as coolant for the spark generated during switching
off. SF6 has got some additional advantages compared to air and oil. It is heavy as compared
to air so that it can easily cool the spark.
Lightening arrester: Used for absorbing the high fault current at the time of lightening. It is
situated near auto transformer because the fault currents travel very fastly and within fraction
of second it directly hits the transformer.
Bus: These are the lines of certain voltage level used for transmitting and connecting the
several components in transmission and distribution.
Potential transformer: Used for measuring and controlling the voltage by means of a relay.
Autotransformer: Transformer which has only one coil for both the windings in order to
reduce the loss and size.
A brief explanation was given on the overall coordination of all the equipment’s in the
substation. In all the Industrial visit was very much useful.
