SPRING 2003 ExxonMobil Licenses WellView for Worldwide Drilling Data Management Exxon licensed WellView as their Well Operation/Schematic Well History data management solution in 1999. After the merger with Mobil, Wellview became established in production operations as an integral part of a standard global technical computing system. ExxonMobil is planning to extend use of WellView to include drilling data management and morning reporting. Integration and well visualization are key drivers. ExxonMobil sees significant benefit in having a single system capable of tracking and managing well operations and equipment throughout the life-cycle of a well, from spud to abandonment. The Houston Exploration Company – Electronic Well File By Joanne C. Hresko, Onshore Operations Manager, The Houston Exploration Company After a detailed selection process in 3rd quarter of 2002, The Houston Exploration Company (THEC) licensed Peloton’s WellView to meet our operational requirements for drilling, completions, workovers and general well file data management requirements. THEC decided to license Peloton’s WellView for multiple reasons: • Improve data availability and quality • Improve the handling of a high volume of well data in order to manage and improve operations efficiency and decision making. • THEC’s rig activity level in South Texas and the Arkoma Basin has resulted in over 25 core users (Operations) and 15-20 non-core users (Land, Geology, Accounting, Management) that report or require well information. With a high level of drilling activity, it is imperative to have accurate information readily accessible. The existing system was becoming difficult to maintain and access quality well information. • We believe that technology has advanced over the years with cost efficient hardware and software that we needed to invest in the “Electronic Well File”. The paper well file with today’s technology is not the most efficient way to manage our well operations data. • We have acquired properties from several operators and the paper well files are in a variety of formats and styles. Lack of uniformity is a problem when accessing data from these files. Data availability is critical as people are handling greater work loads. Drilling and Completion Data Management Workflow Previously, daily drilling and completion reports were generated using Excel spreadsheets, which provided very limited data management options. With WellView, we are able to replicate our “spreadsheet look” within the WellView report generator reducing the field training time to transition from the spreadsheets to WellView. After one day of in-house training on WellView, we now have the field staff providing all daily drilling operations data and the operations engineers reporting and analyzing the data without searching through multiple spreadsheets. The Morning Reporting Extremes On one end: You have complex database systems that require high levels of training from your field staff to learn all the data entry screens. If users notice a mistake with the report, they must navigate back to the screens to refresh their data. Companies must spend more on software vendors, consultants, and their own IT staff to maintain a reasonable level of product knowledge and acceptable data quality. On the other end: You have a simple hard copy or Excel form on which field Peloton will be working on future improvements of WellView Morning Reporting based on staff can quickly client feedback. The requirements for training and clients to create specific reports IT maintenance are greatly reduced, • high quality data collection in a (including Job Setup, Cost, Daily but the quality of data is also robust database, but with little Drilling, or Completion Operations) reduced, and no database is field training that limit the information in the Edit available to track the history and • high field staff acceptance Data screen to the information in the performance of your operations. • improved quality assurance report. WellView created a file for each well (no database) and focused on schematics and well operation history. WellView 5.2 WellView 6.2 1996 – Schematic enhanced and relational database added. Primary focus was production operations and electronic well file. 2000 – First commercial release of WellView’s drilling data management solution. New interactive data entry schematic and reports. WellView 7.2 2002 – New enhanced field reporting with report centric data entry. The data entry screens are driven and filtered by your custom report design. This simplifies field data entry down to the reporting essence while still maintaining the high data quality standards of your well information database. Drilling & Well Data Software Solutions Page 3 Tips for Administrators You can attach electronic files into the WellView and SiteView database. Examples of commonly attached file formats are *.xls, *.doc, *.txt, *.pdf, *.bmp. This provides the flexibility to extend the scope of your database to include scanned documents, emergency response plans, surface surveys, lab analysis, location photos and more. While data inside the attached file is not queryable you can search on any of the text fields describing the attachment. All attachments are associated with a subject area in the Edit Data tree and are stored in the wvAttachments (WellView) or svAttachments (SiteView) table in the The Houston Exploration Company – Electronic Well File Training Schedule Introduction to WellView (Drilling) Calgary: March 25, 2003 Houston: April 1, 2003 Duration: One Day Course Version: 7.2 This one-day course focuses on data entry and analysis for a drilling field user. • Well Explorer • Schematic/Graphs/Reports • Edit Data Drilling Morning Reporting • Tips to speed up data entry • Import/Export/Sync data • Drilling Performance Analysis Introduction to WellView (Completions) Calgary: March 26, 2003 Houston: April 2, 2003 Duration: One Day Course Version: 7.2 This one-day course focuses on data entry and analysis for a completions field user. • Well Explorer • Schematic/Graphs/Reports • Edit Data Completion/Workover Morning Reporting • Tips to speed up data entry • Import/Export/Sync data • Failure Analysis houston 713.914.9454 Continued from Page 1 Production Operations Workflow WellView for Administrators Calgary: March 27, 2003 Duration: One Day Course Version: 7.2 This one-day course is intended for a WellView power user who will implement and configure WellView software. • Installation • Licensing • Oracle/SQL Server Implementation • Security Administrator • Sync Host and Sync Client • Customizations (UDL, Library, Reports, INI, Registry, Schematic) Custom courses also available. Each table in the Edit Data tree can have an attachments sub-folder displayed. For example, if the end users wish to attach files/pictures from wellhead vendors you may wish to display the attachments sub-folder in the WellHead table. It is also possible to view all of the attachments contained in the well/site Edit Data tree by enabling a general attachments folder. The Edit Data configuration is managed in the WellView UDL.mdb. Please contact Peloton Help Desk at 1-888-PELOTON for more details. Handling well histories is similar to the drilling workflow, except more data intensive when you consider the historical paper well file and our well count. The main issue was how to build the Electronic Well File for over 500 wells. We decided to build a “mini” well file for each well beginning with the wells drilled or completed prior to implementing WellView and working back through the years of drilling and acquisitions. With a combination of data importing, data entry and attaching of scanned paper or electronic documents, we will have a “quick look” available for all our operated properties. WellView and Peloton have exceeded our expectations. The total Peloton training and implementation requirement for WellView to be operational for 25-30 users, including 6 concurrently operating drilling rigs, was approximately 10 work days. WellView’s unique morning reporting and visualization has provided technology to make the Electronic Well File a reality for The Houston Exploration Company. calgary web Software site e-mail Drilling & Well Data Solutions 403.263.2915 www.peloton.com [email protected] help desk 1.888.PELOTON
