Wells Cathedral School Jazz Saxophone Programme Personnel: Ambassador, Consultant Artist: Pee Wee Ellis Jazz Coordinator, Big Band Director, Saxophone tutor: Andy Tweed Jazz Ensemble Director, Saxophone Tutor: Edward Leaker A Jazz study pathway within the Specialist Music Programme for gifted saxophonists interested in jazz and popular music to develop their improvisation skills to the highest level. Up to 2 hours of one-to-one tuition per week. WCS Big Band is the premier ensemble, or Jazz Ensemble the training ensemble. Small band coaching. Consultant artist and Ambassador for the programme: Pee Wee Ellis. Masterclasses with leading players form UK and abroad. Course interleaves with traditional study of the instrument. Dedicated practice/teaching room with sole use of an iMac connected to speaker loaded with transcription tools, a library of play-along material and an iTunes library of recordings. There are three entry levels to the course. Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced. What level the student is working at will depend on their first study teacher but as a guide we anticipate that Elementary will be for children from Years 7 - 9. Intermediate - Years 10 & 11, Advanced - Years 12 & 13. Topics covered within the lessons are: Jazz stylisation - swing, vocalisations and embellishment Tune learning Learning to transcribe Sound and technique Groove and rhythm work Language learning - developing a library of licks/phrases Solo building Scale and chord theory Levels In general terms the teacher would work with the pupil to reach these guideline targets at the end of each level. These are not meant to be prescriptive as each pupil is different and may have different needs at different ages. Elementary Typically Lower School age. Basic knowledge of modes, blues scales and pentatonic scales Can improvise fluently over blues based tunes. Has an understanding of how a jazz solo is put together. Has memorised the melody of several standard tunes and can improvise simply but effectively on the chords. Working towards grade 5 ABRSM Jazz or equivalent. Intermediate Typically GCSE level. Developing a knowledge of basic jazz theory. Developing knowledge of modes and major/minor II-V-I Has memorised a core repertoire of 10 standards and can improvise effectively on the chords. Can improvise on a Blues sequence in at least 4 keys. Can improvise on I Got Rhythm Changes in Bb Working towards grade 8 Trinity Guildhall Jazz or equivalent. Advanced Typically A-Level age. Working towards music college entry. Developing a knowledge of jazz theory and harmony. Can smoothly improvise on mayor and minor II-V-I and I-VI-II-V. (in which keys?) Has memorised a core repertoire of 20 standards and can improvise effectively on the chords. Can improvise on a Blues sequence in most keys. Can improvise on I Got Rhythm Changes in 4 keys. Elements of learning Tune learning Groove and rhythm work Language learning through transcriptions Sound and technique - vocalisations and embellishments Writing out of improvisations Solo building Scale and chord theory These elements of jazz learning would be interwoven with more traditional study to work at interpretation, intonation and reading skills. Lesson splits: 1.5 hours improvisation work, 0.5 hours of traditional study. To be monitored by first study teacher and head of department. Second study: Jazz piano lessons would be offered with our specialist jazz piano teacher. They would also be expected to have a doubling instrument, either clarinet or flute as they work through the advanced programme. Equipment: We would guide the pupil on using the appropriate mouthpieces to make the appropriate sounds. Assessments: Technical assessment: scale work as with the traditional study path. The same technical standards apply to both styles of playing. Other jazz oriented scales (modes of the major scale for example) may be introduced with the discretion of the first study tutor. Unaccompanied studies of any style again at the discretion of the tutor. Performance assessment: Performed with a rhythm section as part of a lunchtime recital. To be organised in conjunction with first study teacher. Lunchtime recitals: Specialists perform at a lunchtime recital twice a year. Pupils on the jazz pathway should aim to perform with a rhythm section External Examinations The course uses Associated Board Jazz Syllabus up to Grade 5 and Trinity/Guildhall to Grade 8. Ensembles Big Band: This long established ensemble is directed by Andy Tweed and is the premier ensemble which rehearses and performs regularly through the year. Positions within the group are organised via the heads of departments and mainly consists of specialist musicians. Jazz Ensemble: the junior or training big band. This too is well established. Edward Leaker is the director of this group and meets weekly. Jazz Combo:This is a small band of piano, bass, drums and a front line of one or two saxophonists and brass players. It is directed by Andy Tweed and works on jazz repertoire and ensemble techniques. Materclasses / Consultant Pee Wee Ellis is the current consultant artist. He will come to work with the pupils in groups and individually once or twice a year as well as dropping in from time to time. Additionally other artists will visit to give masterclasses. Past guests have included: Ernie Watts, Pete Long and Iain Ballamy.
