Applications are invited for the post of: Deputy Head of Lighting Responsible to: HEAD OF LIGHTING The Royal Court is the home of the English Stage Company Limited (ESC) and is the UK’s leading theatre dedicated to new writing. Up to 16 plays a year are staged between two theatre spaces (the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs and the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs) at the Royal Court’s home on Sloane Square. Over 100,000 people visit the Royal Court every year and over 100,000 more see our work elsewhere, including transfers to the West End and New York, National and International touring, online projects and London residencies in Tottenham and Pimlico. A significant amount of play development activity takes place year-round. This work aims to find and nurture the most talented new writers and develop the highest quality plays, for which the Royal Court is internationally renowned. There is an ongoing programme of writers’ attachments, readings, workshops and playwriting groups. The Royal Court Theatre also has two commercial subsidiaries, Royal Court Theatre Productions Ltd (RCTP), which facilitates the transfer of Royal Court productions to the West End and ESC Catering Limited set up to run the catering operation at the theatre. Main Purpose The Deputy Head of Lighting supports the Head of Lighting in the delivery and management of technical lighting requirements for all ESC productions across two theatres and related projects, contributing to and upholding the highest production values on all ESC shows and ensuring all technical work is undertaken safely and efficiently and within allocated resources. As the Lighting Department takes over the management of video content in our productions we will require someone who is comfortable and confident in theatrical video techniques and equipment. This is a key role within the Production team at the Royal Court, combining excellent technical ability with the people skills and experience to support the Head of Lighting in the management of a team of 4. The role also involves day to day running and maintenance for the building electrical systems. Key responsibilities: Productions Working with the head of lighting in organising the efficient running of the lighting department on all productions, events and hires within the Royal Court programme Deputising for the Head of Lighting as necessary reporting back all relevant issues Working with the lighting & set designer of each production in realising their design Managing and running lighting and AV budgets for productions to which you are assigned 1 Updating drawings and lighting documentation using Vectorworks & Lightwright Archiving show information for future use outside of the building Programming the lighting console for productions/hires/Events in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs and Jerwood Theatre Downstairs when needed. Supervision of the Lighting Technicians working on and operating specific projects and productions Liaison with visiting companies regarding all electrical, lighting and AV matters Building and maintaining a good working relationship with contractors and suppliers used by the production department generally. Assisting the Head of Lighting and the Head of Production with the management of energy consumption and to continue exploring green issues within the company Departmental Management Supporting the Head of Lighting in the day to day management of the permanent and freelance lighting crew Assisting with the running of the annual appraisal process and monitoring training needs within the team. Supervise staff working on rigging and general maintenance Providing support for other technical and general departments if required. Maintenance Overseeing and managing the lighting department’s maintenance periods each year Taking responsibility for the maintenance of all equipment associated with the lighting department, including PAT testing within the building, both Production and non production equipment Maintaining the day to day running of the lighting department workshops and stock including tapes, building & theatre lamps, hardware and colour Sharing responsibility with the Head of Lighting for the electrical installations of wiring and special projects, ensuring all annual inspections take place Helping to manage the maintenance of the buildings lighting and low voltage electrical systems Building and maintaining a good working relationship with contractors and suppliers used by the lighting department Health and Safety Supporting the Head of Lighting in ensuring the best health and safety practice at all times Ensuring the workshop and all areas under the Lighting department’s control are kept clear, clean and tidy at all times. Undertaking risk assessments for all aspects of work undertaken by the Lighting team, when required to do so by the Production Managers or the Head of Lighting Actively promoting a positive Health and Safety culture and environment at all times when working at the Royal Court or elsewhere on behalf of the company. Being fully conversant with the Royal Court’s health and safety policy and supporting key staff with overall responsibility for management of health and safety. Acting as an appointed first aider and Fire Marshall if required (training provided) Sustainability Supporting the Head of Lighting in upholding the Royal Court’s sustainability policy, ensuring we continue to work sustainably and strive to reduce energy consumption and manage resources responsibly Working with the lighting team to ensure the department remains committed to sustainable practices and contributing to the ongoing development of our practice by suggesting new initiatives. 2 General Keeping up to date with current lighting technology and best practice. Attending fortnightly department meeting, deputising the running of meetings in the absences of the Head of Lighting Providing ongoing guidance, support & training to other technicians within the lighting department Working on projects in conjunction with other departments within the building, and supporting the Theatre Manager and FOH / Bar and Kitchen staff on external hires and one off projects. Attending regular production and staff meetings as required. Play an active part in the development, promotion and implementation of company policies, access, health and safety, equality and diversity. To carry out any other duties required by the theatre in pursuance of the above objectives. Personal specification: Essential: Previous experience of working at a senior level in a lighting team, ideally within a producing theatre. Experience of working with professional lighting designers on large scale productions is essential, with an approachable and supportive nature, sympathetic to the designers’ visions and concepts A solid understanding of the production process. Strong knowledge and experience of using ETC Eos Family Consoles Experience of working with moving Lights and LED fixtures including ETC Lustrs ,VL1000s & Source 4 Revolutions A good working knowledge of video installation and equipment and the delivery of video design. Knowledge and experience of touring / relighting Experience of managing and running medium to large teams Excellent communications skills Strong IT skills Including Microsoft Office, Vectorworks, Lightwright A positive attitude and willingness to support and help other staff members, regardless of department, is required at all times. Ability to work calmly under pressure in a fast paced environment Experience in building electrical maintenance A keen interest in new technology and industry trends Desirable: Formal electrical qualification IPAF Harness trained 3 Terms & Conditions: The rates of pay, conditions of employment, and overtime agreement conform in principle to the prevailing SOLT/BECTU terms and conditions. Inevitably there are a few areas where Royal Court working practices vary from those in the SOLT/BECTU agreement, and these can be clarified on request. Title of post: Deputy Head of Lighting Hours: Salary: 40 hours per week, 5 Days a week £556.35 Per Week (BECTU Grade 2) Overtime as per SOLT/BECTU agreement. Holiday entitlement: 20 days per year, plus 8 days for statutory holidays Contract: Permanent, subject to a six month probationary period. Notice period: 6 weeks Pension: The Royal Court operates a contributory company pension scheme for all permanent employees. The company contribution is capped at 5% of basic salary.
