Performance Evaluation – Technical Theatre (as Audience)

Use this form to review any play that you view. You will need to:
 Write your responses in paragraph format with 5-7 sentences per question.
 Attach a ticket stub and program to your review
 Type your review, double-space and use 12 point font

1. Describe the theatre facility in detail. What type of stage was the play performed on?
Where did you sit? How was your view from this seat?
2. Describe the plot (story) of the play. What happened in the play? Identify the conflict(s) and
resolution(s).
3. Describe the set in detail. Use proper stage terminology (upstage, downstage) to describe
where the furniture/set pieces were placed. What color scheme(s) was/were used? How
did the designer’s choices affect the mood of the play or scene?
4. Describe the lighting. How did the lighting contribute to the overall production? Was there
any special lighting? (including colors, spotlights, lightning, day/night scenes, projected
shapes…etc.) What mood did the lighting create?
5. Describe the use of sound. How did the sound contribute to the overall production? Were
there any special sound effects? Was music used to enhance a scene? What mood did the
sound create?
6. Describe the costumes worn by at least four different characters in the play. Include specific
information about color, style, accessories,…etc.
7. Describe how make-up was used to enhance the look of the characters in the production.
What make-up techniques did you see? (old age, wigs/hair color, character or fantasy
make-up…etc.) If no special make up was used describe why you think this decision was
made.
8. Was this play a musical? If not, go to question 9. If yes, answer the following. Discuss how
the set designer handled the need for multiple sets which is a common requirement in
musical productions.
9. Discuss your overall reaction to the production. Did you enjoy it? Why or why not? What
was your favorite technical element or effect and least favorite technical element or effect?
10. What did you learn about technical theatre from this viewing experience?
