PARTS OF THE PLANT
Roots
• These are important for 2 reasons:
a) To anchor the plant in the soil
b) To absorb water and nutrients like
nitrates, sulphates, dissolved
magnesium, iron etc

roots
Root hairs
• These are tiny hairs that are found near
the growing tips of the roots.
• They look like cotton wool
• They provide a very large surface area for
absorbing water from the soil
Root hairs
Stomata
• These are tiny holes in the lower epidermis
(skin) of the leaf. They let the gases, (carbon
dioxide and oxygen) enter and exit the leaf.
• They also let water evaporate from the leaf
• They can open and close
• They will CLOSE when the plant needs to keep
water in the plant when the conditions are dry
• Stoma (singular) Stomata (plural)
Leaf veins
There are 2 kinds of vessels or
tubes inside the veins.
XYLEM
• These are tubes that transport water and
minerals from the roots up through the rest
of the plant to the leaves
PHLOEM
• These are tubes that transport food from
the leaves to other parts of the plant.
(Food flows in the phloem)
