WELCOME TO
PRINCIPLES OF THE BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES
EASTMOOR ACADEMY BIOMEDICAL PATHWAY
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This is the first of four high school courses in Project Lead The Way’s Biomedical
Science Pathway. It provides an introduction to the biomedical sciences through exciting
“hands-on” projects and problems. Throughout the course, students will be introduced to
various careers in the biomedical field as they investigate various health conditions
including diabetes, sickle-cell disease, and heart disease. The course is designed to
provide an overview of all the courses in the Biomedical Sciences program and to lay the
scientific foundation necessary for student success in the subsequent courses. Please see
the outline on the back of this sheet for more detailed information about the lessons that
will be covered in this class.
YOU WILL NEED




FLASH DRIVE (I suggest that it be fastened to a lanyard with your student ID)
BINDER with eight tabbed dividers. Binder should be at least 1.5”
SCIENTIFIC LAB NOTEBOOK (WILL BE PROVIDED!)
SUGGESTED: calculator, colored pencils, earbuds or headphones

PBS COURSE OVERVIEW
This course is divided into six instructional units. Each unit relates either to a specific
body system and a particular disorder related to that system or to diseases and their
treatment/prevention in general. All units include an aspect of career exploration as well.
Unit One: The Mystery
This unit introduces the students to a case of a mysterious death. The victim had
several health issues throughout her life, and it is those issues that make up the core ideas
for each of the following units. The hands-on activities in this unit reflect some of the
principles of forensic investigations. This unit will also give students an opportunity to
become familiar with the particular software we will be using for this course and the
various types of assignments they will be expected to complete throughout the course.
Unit Two: Diabetes
This unit includes a study of how our bodies use foods as energy along with the
implications of how the normal pathways are changed in a person with diabetes.
Unit Three: Sickle-Cell Disease
This unit introduces the concept of how genetic disorders are carried in the
chromosomes, or DNA. Labs in this unit include probability studies and the
understanding of pedigrees.
Unit Four: Heart Disease
In this unit the students will learn about the normal structure and function of the
heart and blood. They will also have the opportunity to measure heart function and
discover some of the ways that heart dysfunctions may be treated. As the students learn
the difference between “good” and “bad” cholesterol, they will also become familiar with
some important molecular biology techniques that may be used to diagnose specific
genetic disorders.
Unit Five: Infectious Disease
In this unit, students will explore various types of bacteria and learn how they
may be identified during the process of diagnosing infectious diseases. Students will
learn about aseptic technique and re-emphasize how to avoid contagious illnesses.
Unit Six: Post Mortem
In this short, cumulative unit, we put it all together and figure out what killed our
victim at the start of the course.
