HIV-Human Immunodeficiency Virus:
virus that attacks the immune system.
AIDS-Acquired Immune Deficiency
Syndrome: disease in which the
immune system of the patient is
weakened.
Testing for HIV:
• Only in blood tests-CONFIDENTIAL
• May take up to 6 months for enough antibodies to “show up”
• Western blot test (common test in US)
• EIA test that screens for antibodies in the
blood.
• Certain health conditions (hemophilia,
hepatitis and pregnancy) can cause false
positive.
Can be HIV positive for up to ten
years before developing AIDS
With AIDS the immune system has
been damaged and does not
defend the body properly against
germs and cancer.
Opportunistic infections- infections
that occur in the individuals who do
not have a healthy immune system.
• These infections are difficult to treat
• Infected individual suffers one illness to
another
• HIV is progressive-destroys immune system
cells over time; doesn’t necessarily mean they
have AIDS yet.
4 Stages of HIV Infection: (person is
infectious immediately after
contracting virus.)
• 1st stage-Primary infection; person may have
flu-like symptoms then disappears.
• 2nd stage-Asymptomatic stage=no symptoms.
Feels healthy, may last from 6 months to 10
years. Virus is making copies of itself

• 3rd stage- Symptomatic stage. Easily tired, loss
of appetite, weight loss, night sweats,
diarrhea, t-cell count falls below 200 (normally
800-1200)
• 4th stage-AIDS. One or more opportunistic
infections or cancers are present.
