Movement 2 – in Germany 20,000 children and young adults began marching to Rome
Thousand died
The others met the Pope who told them to go home and wait until they were

The Effects of the Crusades
Showed the Power of Whom? The Church
What it did for the people who left their homes :
It encouraged thousands to leave their homes and travel and discover faraway new lands
Exposed to new things, new cultures
Brought them to the Holy Land
Those who were fighting believed that they were earning a “pass to heaven”
What it did for the people who stayed:
Women who were left at home gained more rights and power
Gave power and rights to women who stayed behind to manage the property
What it did for the Merchants:
Expanded trade between Europe and Southwest Asia which benefited both the Christians
and the Muslims
What the failure of the Crusades did:
Lessened the power of the Pope
Weakened the feudal nobility
Increased the power of the King
Thousands of knights and other participants lost their lives and fortunes
The fall of Constantinople weakened the Byzantine Empire
How it impacted Muslims:
Left behind a legacy of bitterness and hatred that continues to the present
How it impacted Christians and Jews:
For Jews in Europe, the Crusades were a time of increased persecution
Jewish/Christian relations declined as their leadership also declined
