Christians in Western Europe
to fight the Muslims for control
of the holy land, Jerusalem.
Why were many willing to fight
in the Crusades knowing that
there was good chance that
they might never return? On
your handout, match the
people with the reason that
best suits them for fighting in

help… For, as most of you have heard, the
Turks and the Arabs [Muslims] have
attacked them and have conquered the
territory of the Byzantine Empire… They
have occupied more and more of the lands
of the Christians…They have killed and
captured many, and have destroyed the
churches and devastated the Empire…
