Antonio Caldara
• An Italian Baroque composer
• Died on Dec.28 1736 in Vienna
• Wrote about 3,500 works (over 90 operas, including
cantatas, and oratorios)
• Some famous works: Missa dolorasa, and
L'Olimpiade
Early life
• Born in Venice around 1670
His father was a local violinist,
but not famous.
• He was a choir boy at St.
Mark’s Cathedral

Antonio Caldara
• In Venice he began working for the Duke of Mantua
in 1699, appointed maestro di cappella
• Then went to Rome in 1708 into the service of
Cardinal Ottoboni
• 1717 moved again this time to Vienna as the vicekapellmeister under Charles VI
Personal Life
• Met his wife in Rome
• Caterina Petrolli was a vocalist (alto) they married in
May 1711
• Had two daughters : Sophia Jacobina Maria, and
Francesca Isobella Giovanna

• Opera written in 1733
