Verbs in a Sentence
Words do not become verbs until they are used as verbs in sentences. The word “snow” is an
example of this:
“The snow is cold.”
In this sentence, the word “snow” is used as a noun. “Is” is the verb.
“It snowed last night.”
In this sentence, the word “snow” is used as a verb because it is the action that took place.
“It is snowing tonight.”
In this sentence, the word “snow” is used as a verb because it is an action that is taking place.
Three Types of Verbs
1. Auxiliary or Helping Verbs: These are always verbs. You should look for these verbs
first when diagramming a sentence. These verbs can come in many forms, but most are
variations on the following three verbs:
be,
do,
have
2. Regular Verbs: These verbs need “ed” or “ing” added to them to change from present to
past tense.
snow,
snowed,
snowing
3. Irregular Verbs: These verbs have internal spelling changes.
