Democracy and Greece’s Golden Age
Chapter 5 Section 3 Vocabulary
The Delian League
• The Delian League, founded in 478 BC, was an
association of Greek city-states, under the
leadership of Athens, whose purpose was to
continue fighting the Persian Empire after the
end of the Second Persian invasion of Greece.
Phalanx
• A group of heavily armed infantry formed in
ranks and files close and deep, with shields
joined and long spears overlapping.
Direct Democracy
• Direct democracy is a form of democracy in which
people decide on policies directly, as opposed to a
representative democracy in which people vote
for representatives who then decide on policy.
• Basically every person gets to vote on every law.
Pericles
• Athenian leader whose
leadership contributed to
Athens' political and cultural
supremacy in Greece; he
ordered the construction of
the Parthenon, and
strengthened Athens navy
and government.
Peloponnesian War
• A series of conflicts fought between Sparta
and Athens. Sparta eventually emerged
victorious but both sides were negatively
impacted by the fighting.
