'Micro Implant Anchorage In Orthodontics'
The BOSG had organised a Continuing Education
series programme on 'Micro Implants' as Lec / Oem
presentation by one of the pioneers of the system,
Prof. Hee Moon Kyung, of the Kyungpook National
University, Daegu, Korea.
mechanotherapy in conjuction with the ' Micro
Implants' . The emphasis on understanding the
underlying biomechanics was effectively stressed
by Prof. Kyung.
The Orthodontist now has a tool to generate Absolute
Anchorage which is obtained through mechani cal
retention and not by osseointegration as would be
desired with prosthetic implants. The microimplants
are strategically located in the Maxilla, Mandi b le
and can be positioned even between roots.
Apart from opening up new avenues in treatment
options, even when conventional anchorage is not
available, this approach effectively tackles some
of the vexing concerns of the Orthodontist, such
as, Patient Compliance Prdictibility of Results
Treatment Time
Prof. Kyung took the delegates through the
development of the system, with a historical
perspective, to the' Absoanchor developed by him
and demonstrated the diverse applications of the
system with a wealth of well documented clinical
records. These included, Intrusion Molar uprighting
and protraction Scissor bite correction En masse
retraction etc etc

The One Day Programme was conducted at the
luxurious ambience of the Grand Hyatt, Mumbai
on Sunday, 27 th June 2004. It was well attended,
with participation not only from Mumbai but also
from neighbouring states. There was also significant
participation Student Delegates, some of whom are
engaged into research on the

and President Elect lOS, as registered delegates.

With the introduction of ' Micro Implants' the very
scope of conventional orthodontic mechanotherapy
has altered dramatically. In fact one needs to
orient oneself anew to assess the potential of the

The procedure as employed was presented through
well made graphics, patient videos and live
demonstration on models. Prof. Kyung emphasized
that this can be done as a routine office
appointment by the orthodontist.
The well documented presentation ended with a
Q & A session, with Dr. M.K.Prakash aiding the
proceedings. A small cultural programme, depicting

the rich folk art trad ition of M aharashtra was
presented, which had the visitors enthralled.
The entire session was dedicated to the memory
of late Dr. Prem Prakash , the doyen of Indi an
Orthodontics, Fonder M ember of the BOSG and the
lOS, who passed away earlier in the month.
Prof. Kyung was accompanied by his wife, Ms. Hee
and two of his students, Drs. lang and Young, on
thier maiden visit to India. BOSG felt previleged
to receive them in Mumbai.
This was the first presentation of a speaker from
Korea and some of the delegates found the English
, different ',used as we are to the English of the
West - however all that it required was a small
period of familiarisation. But with shrinking global
boundaries, it is about time that we looked forward
to the vast treasures of orthodontic activity and
innovations in this part of the world. All it would
take is some more practice through more exposure.
And we are indeed looking forward to it.
