News Hyderabad Orthodontic Study Group Hyderabad Orthodonti c Study Group in association with Smile Care (I ), Bombay have conducted a two day hands on course on "Advanced preadjusted edgewise appliance" on 10th and 11 th July, 2004 at Hotel Best Western (Hotel Amrutha Castle), Hyderabad. This course was Sponsored by American orthodontics. The Faculty were Dr.Ashok Karad, Director, Smile Care from Mumbai and Dr. N.R. Krishnaswamy, Prof & Head, Ragas Dental College, Chennai. The course was attended by 45 participants which includes Practitioners,Teaching staff and PG students from all over India. Overall, there was overwhelming response for this course and all participants have gained rich experiences of the facu Ity. A banquet was arranged on 10th night at the lawns of Jubilee Hills Club,Hyderabad. BOSG - Prof. Kyung Lec / Dem Programme 'Micro Implant Anchorage In Orthodontics' The BOSG had organised a Continuing Education series programme on 'Micro Implants' as Lec / Oem presentation by one of the pioneers of the system, Prof. Hee Moon Kyung, of the Kyungpook National University, Daegu, Korea. mechanotherapy in conjuction with the ' Micro Implants' . The emphasis on understanding the underlying biomechanics was effectively stressed by Prof. Kyung. The Orthodontist now has a tool to generate Absolute Anchorage which is obtained through mechani cal retention and not by osseointegration as would be desired with prosthetic implants. The microimplants are strategically located in the Maxilla, Mandi b le and can be positioned even between roots. Apart from opening up new avenues in treatment options, even when conventional anchorage is not available, this approach effectively tackles some of the vexing concerns of the Orthodontist, such as, Patient Compliance Prdictibility of Results Treatment Time Prof. Kyung took the delegates through the development of the system, with a historical perspective, to the' Absoanchor developed by him and demonstrated the diverse applications of the system with a wealth of well documented clinical records. These included, Intrusion Molar uprighting and protraction Scissor bite correction En masse retraction etc etc I The One Day Programme was conducted at the luxurious ambience of the Grand Hyatt, Mumbai on Sunday, 27 th June 2004. It was well attended, with participation not only from Mumbai but also from neighbouring states. There was also significant participation Student Delegates, some of whom are engaged into research on the Micro Implants " for their dissertations.We were happy to have Drs. Jayanth Dehadrai and Joseph Issac, Hon. Secretary and President Elect lOS, as registered delegates. I With the introduction of ' Micro Implants' the very scope of conventional orthodontic mechanotherapy has altered dramatically. In fact one needs to orient oneself anew to assess the potential of the 174 The procedure as employed was presented through well made graphics, patient videos and live demonstration on models. Prof. Kyung emphasized that this can be done as a routine office appointment by the orthodontist. The well documented presentation ended with a Q & A session, with Dr. M.K.Prakash aiding the proceedings. A small cultural programme, depicting News the rich folk art trad ition of M aharashtra was presented, which had the visitors enthralled. The entire session was dedicated to the memory of late Dr. Prem Prakash , the doyen of Indi an Orthodontics, Fonder M ember of the BOSG and the lOS, who passed away earlier in the month. Prof. Kyung was accompanied by his wife, Ms. Hee and two of his students, Drs. lang and Young, on thier maiden visit to India. BOSG felt previleged to receive them in Mumbai. This was the first presentation of a speaker from Korea and some of the delegates found the English , different ',used as we are to the English of the West - however all that it required was a small period of familiarisation. But with shrinking global boundaries, it is about time that we looked forward to the vast treasures of orthodontic activity and innovations in this part of the world. All it would take is some more practice through more exposure. And we are indeed looking forward to it. o o o o o o ... and as the Prof. observed very aptly, " knowledge is treasure and practice is the key!" With New lOS Directory on hand, it has become very easy to communicate with all orthodontists of AP and also India.Since a maximum No of Orthodontists are in Hyderabad(numbering 70-80), we have named this study Group as Hyderabad Orthodontic Study Group. Already there are 30 members in our study Group and 13 Members on Yahoo Study Group. The Activities of HOSG are as inception. follows from its Felicitations to Padmashri . A.S.Narayana and Dr.B Seshadri and Dr.C. Dinner hosted by Dr.A.S.Naraya na 30-3 - 2003 - Dinner Meeting at Chiron Fort sponsored by Hyderabad Dental Depot. 10-6-2003 - Lecture by Dr.A.S.Kalha -" Recent advances in straight wire appliance" at Medicity Hospitals followed by tea 30-6-2003 - Lecture by Dr.Sadasiva Shetty,Past President, lOS at Hotel Palace Heights followed by Dinner. This is the the best programme where all orthodontists and Oral Surgeons from Hyderabad numbering 100 attended Dr.Shetty's Lecture on " Surgical orthodontics" 30-11-2003 - Tea Meeting of General body of Study Group ar.d elected new office body at IMA Hall opp. Hotel Haridwar at 430pm.We have discussed the possibility of conducting a HANDS ON course in Hyderabad .
