 An animal consists of many thousands, millions, even
trillions of cells organized into complex tissues and
organs. The transformation from a zygote to this
multicellular state is truly phenomenal.
 Order and precision are required at every step, and
both are clearly displayed in the first two major
phases of embryonic development”: cleavage and
gastrulation.
