Introduction
The Graduate Profile is a statement of the generic and specific attributes and skills of graduates of
the programme including the body of knowledge attained (CUAP Functions and Procedures, 20132014). The framework for graduate outcomes in the Graduate Profile may vary depending on the
award, however attention should be paid to the development in graduates of lifelong learning skills.
A Graduate Profile may contain the personal attributes, interactive attributes and specific
programme attributes which should ideally be displayed by graduates.

Life-long Learning Skills and Attributes of Graduates
Graduates will demonstrate the following attributes:














Knowledge of the basic principles underlying the acoustics, analysis, and perception of sound.
The ability to identify all types of hearing aids and be able to make ear impressions. The
ability to identify, make and modify all coupling systems.
The ability to fit new types of amplification to children and special populations by using target
gain curves, and loudness growth functions on programmable hearing aids.
The ability to set up a private dispensing office including market analysis, administrative
duties, financial considerations, and third party payees.
The ability to identify and discuss and fit assistive listening devices.
The ability to discuss various cochlear implants and discuss how one may be programmed.
The ability to program different kinds of programmable hearing aids.
The ability to conduct and appropriately record results from pure tone air/bone conduction and
sound field testing, immittance testing, and other basic audiological testing.
The ability to conduct otoscopic inspections and appropriately report the results.
Understand the basic principles of genetic causes of hearing loss.
Knowledge of the need to use a test battery approach for differential diagnosis.
An awareness of multicultural issues in clinical audiology and a commitment to the Treaty of
Waitangi.
Knowledge of computer-based systems used in delivery of audiological services.
Ability to perform adequate calibration of audiologic instrumentation according to accepted
standards.















Understand the mechanism of auditory processing and central auditory processing disorders.
Ability to administer and interpret central auditory processing test batteries, and develop
recommendations for deficit-specific management services.
Knowledge of the effects of hearing loss on communication and the need for speech-language,
hearing, and educational professionals to work together as a team.
Knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the auditory system.
Knowledge of cochlear implants, corporation technology in cochlear-implant industry, and
contemporary speech processing strategies for cochlear implants.
Understand issues of deaf culture in the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders.
Understanding of the underlying neurophysiology and principles of measurement, analysis
and interpretation of Auditory Evoked Potentials in normal and clinical populations.
Knowledge of hearing conservation measures and standards.
Knowledge of the aetiology and pathology of various auditory disorders; medical correlates of
hearing impairment including medical/surgical intervention and pharmacology; and the
audiological and otologic evaluation and management of auditory disorders.
Knowledge of basic auditory embryology, and developmental milestones.
Understand the rationale for and be able to conduct a range of assessments appropriate for
paediatric and developmentally delayed patients
Understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system and procedures used to
evaluate the vestibular system
Knowledge of vestibular rehabilitation and knowledge of tinnitus and the procedures used to
evaluate and treat it
Familiarity with the research literature in hearing disorders.
To provide audiological services across a range of hospital, clinic, and school settings to child
and adult clients with developmental and acquired hearing loss.
This Graduate Profile is reviewed annually and was last reviewed in 2013.
