Athena was not born like everyone else was. She sprouted from the head of her
father, Zeus, fully grown. After Zeus swallowed his first wife, Metis, he regretted it and
was being punished by having a very bad headache, resulting in Athena coming out of his
head. In order to get rid of the pain, Zeus had another god split open his head, and out
came Athena who was dressed in armor.
Athena was the goddess of wisdom,
military victory, and crafts. She was the goddess
of military victory because she found tactics other
than fighting to win the battles. Athena helped
take care of the heroes Perseus, Jason, Cadmus,
Odysseus and Heracules while they were in battle.
Athena was named the goddess of crafts because
she invented the flute, trumpet, rake, chariot, ship,
horse-bridle, ox-yoke, plough, and earthenware
pot. Not only was she an inventor, she also was
the first teacher of science of numbers, and
cooking, weaving, and spinning.
Athena was normally a nice goddess. She
was loved by most everyone and she loved everyone. But Athena differed from the other
god and goddesses. She was not interested in marriage or sex; she would rather love
everyone as if they were a brother or a sister. Most every god would have loved to marry
Athena, but she was unwilling to. Athena was the first out of three virgin goddesses.
The city, Athens was named after Athena. One story says that Poseidon wanted
the city. "He demonstrated his power by striking his trident on the rock of the Acropolis
so that it opened, and salt water gushed forth, subsiding again into a deep well."

Athena ended up having the capital of Greece named after her because of her creation of
the olive tree. The olive tree provided the people of Greece with plenty of food to eat.
She proved that she could create something more helpful to the people of Athens, than
what her uncle Poseidon could ever create.
