B. F. Skinner
BY PETRA AND SAMARA
1904-1990
HIS THEORY

“The theory of B.F. Skinner is based upon the idea that learning is a
function of change in overt behavior. Changes in behavior are the result
of an individual's response to events (stimuli) that occur in the
environment.” – instructionaldesign.org

“B.F. Skinner (1938) coined the term operant conditioning; it means roughly
changing of behavior by the use of reinforcement which is given after the
desired response. Skinner identified three types of responses or operant
that can follow behavior.”-www.simplypsychology.org

We agree with his statement from learning from personal experiences.
WHO IS B. F. SKINNER?

He was known as the father Operant Conditioning

B. F. Skinner was best known for his research in social development in children.

Skinner studied how children react to their surroundings after certain events
occur in their lives.

Skinner found that positive reinforcement strengthens a behavior by providing
a consequence an individual finds rewarding.

Negative reinforcement strengthens behavior because its stops or removes an
unpleasant experience.

The major influence on human behavior is learning from our environment
Negative reinforcement

Negative reinforcement is when a child shows negative behaviour and
you respond with a negative consequence. This shows the child that what
they did was wrong so they wont repeat the action in the future.
Positive reinforcement

Positive reinforcement is when a child does something good so you reward
or show positive encouragement to good behavior. Positive
reinforcement helps show the child that what they are doing is a good
thing so they’ll continue to repeat the action.
Punishment and extinction

Extinction is when a child does something bad so you take something from
them ie dessert or a toy.

Punishment is when you discipline your child ie spanking them (we
disagree with this)
Relation to kids we know

Fred was a 6 year old who stole a lot, he stole from his family and kids at
school. Once his mother became aware of this she grounded him and sat
him down and told him about the repercussions such as jail it took him a
while nut eventually after a few groundings, he stopped stealing for good.

Sherry was a 7 year old girl who didn’t really like doing dishes but one day
she realized the dishes hadn’t been done so she thought she could help
out and do them. Her mom realized shed done this and told her what a
good girl she was, this made sherry feel good and she realized that when
she helped out, good things happen.
