Research the causes of the Crusades and how it
affected everyone from the peasants to the

UNITING FACTORS

Western Europe was united because of their
shared ideas of feudalism (kings and queens),
geographically because they lived next to one
another (Western Europe), and religiously
because a vast majority practiced Christianity.


Information for the beginnings of the Crusade:
The first Crusade started in 1095
Turks attacked the Byzantines
Byzantines asks Western European Christians for help.
The Pope asks the Western Kings to send knights and soldiers to confront the
Muslim threat.

IMPORTANT NOTES
The Crusades were a series of wars between
Christian Kingdoms and Islamic Leaders for
control of the Holy Lands (Jerusalem and its
surround areas.)
 The Crusades were initiated in Europe in 1095
by a Pope named Urban II who had much
influence over the Christian Kings of Europe.

IMPORTANT NOTES II
The Pope was regarded as the highest authority
of Christianity in Western Europe.
 The Byzantine Emperor was expecting some
mercenaries to come as an aid.
 Instead, a vast horde of Christian knights
answered the calls of a Crusade.
 Many gave away their life savings in order to
prepare by buying swords, armor, and supplies to
take with them.

