Medical Physics-Radiation Physics (Spring Semester)
Description
The course Medical Physics – Radiation offered in the Department of Physics, University of
Ioannina, of 52 hours in total is to introduce the student to the applications of the physics of
ionizing radiation in biomedical sciences. It consists of lectures (60% of total number of teaching
hours), laboratory exercises at the University and the University Hospital of Ioannina,
educational visits to the Medical Physics Laboratory of the University of Ioannina, the
Radiology, Radiotherapy, and Nuclear Medicine departments of the University Hospital of
Ioannina (40% of the total hours of instruction).
Course Syllabus
Introduction
The importance of Physics in Medicine. The profession of Hospital Physicist. Review of
statistical measurements, atomic and nuclear structure, radioactive decay with emphasis on
radioactive sources used in biomedical sciences, Interaction of ionizing radiation-matter and its
applications in Medicine and Radiation Protection, Quality assurance and quality control in
medical laboratories using ionizing radiation
Dosimetry of ionizing radiation
Methodologies, Dosimetric quantities, Detectors, Spectroscopic devices and dosimeters (e.g.
detectors and dosimeters used in medical imaging to study the physical and working
environment and to identify and quantify radioactive materials inside the human body and
personal dosimeters)
