Welcome to the 6th grade World History Ancient Civilizations course at Skirball
Middle School. My name is Ms. Jenkins and I will be your teacher for the
upcoming school year. I am very excited to begin working with all of you!
Course Description
In this class, students will study the ancient civilizations that form the basis for
modern society. This course starts with the study of the first hominids, and will
end with the height of the Roman Empire. Students will learn to think critically
and make connections as they study many fascinating cultures, from the
kingdoms of Egypt to the democracies of Greece, and even the vast Chinese
empires. As the course progresses, students will be able to describe the
similarities and differences between these ancient societies. Students will
demonstrate mastery in this course through writing projects, class
presentations, exams, and large projects.
Class Expectations
Listen – pay attention
Engage – participate and be an active individual in our classroom
Attend – be in your seat on time
Respect, Respond, be Responsible – be positive
Negotiate – find a way to make our classroom work for you
Classroom Materials:
Please see Materials List and purchase materials this week by Thursday and Friday.
Classroom Consequences
1. First offense: verbal warning
2. Second offense: temporary desk relocation/ loss of Scholar Dollars
3. Third offense: parent contact/ detention
If inappropriate behavior continues, you will be asked to leave the class until a
parent conference is scheduled, along with a signed behavior contract, prior to
returning back to class.
Additionally, Jack H. Skirball Middle School is starting an exciting new program
called “Scholar Dollars.” This program rewards students for maintaining a
scholarly presence throughout the school day. The opportunity to earn Scholar
Dollars helps the entire school maintain an optimal learning environment so
students feel safe and empowered to do their very best work.
Homework and Classwork
Due to the nature of the course, most assignments will be completed during
class time. Therefore, it is imperative that students remain on task to
complete each assignment in class. Homework should be turned in complete
and on time. Students will be required to attend mandatory detention
scheduled by the teacher that week to complete all missing assignments.
Additionally, it is the responsibility of the student to get information about
the assignments and to make up any work or quizzes from the day missed;
before/after class and after school will be the only times missing work can be
discussed with the teacher. Students will have until the end of the unit to turn
in any missing assignments; afterwards, assignments will not be accepted.
