Error Correction – Capitals and Periods in Sentences When you write, you need to separate your ideas into sentences. A sentence is a group of words that has a subject and a verb at the minimum. A capital letter shows the beginning of a sentence. A period shows the end of a sentence. It is not always easy to decide where one sentence stops and another sentence begins. To help you decide, look for the subjects and verbs in a sentence. A subject tells who or what the sentence is about. The verb tells the action of the subject. The subject usually begins the sentence, but sometimes a time word is at the beginning. Example: I was born in El Salvador. My husband is from Mexico. My husband’s name is Hector. He works in construction. Now we live in Arizona. We have three children, two sons and a daughter. My oldest son is ten years old. He goes to Avondale Elementary School. Now, look at the paragraph below. The writer did not use capitals or periods! Help the writer by adding capital letters and periods to separate the sentences. Capitalize any other words (names) as needed. Underline the subjects and verbs. my name is noemi nakamura i am from japan i speak japanese i live in Arizona with my husband he is american my parents, brothers, and one sister live in japan my youngest sister lives in california she isn’t married she is a student at a university there
