Unit C Vocabulary
magnification: to enlarge an image of an object
cell: basic unit of structure and function of life
unicellular: made of only ONE cell; bacteria
multicellular: made of many cells; humans, trees, etc.
prokaryotic: cells that DO NOT have membrane-bound structures; bacteria
eukaryotic: cells that DO have membrane-bound structures; mammals
cell membrane: the outer boundary of a cell; it allows some materials to pass
through, but not all
nucleus: structure near the center of the cell that controls the cell; includes
DNA and chromatin; "the brain"
cytoplasm: mostly water gel-like fluid that contains all the organelles in a cell
cell wall (PLANTS ONLY): outer barrier for support; made of cellulose
organelle: structures in the cytoplasm of a cell that carry out cell activities
chloroplasts: It is a green organelle because it contains chlorophyll. This is
where photosynthesis occurs. Chloroplasts are ONLY found in plant cells.
