Evidence of Evolution Web Quest Lab
Reporting Sheet
Step 1: Go to Mrs. Gilbert’s web site either by typing in the link or by searching on the district’s website.

Types of Evidence investigated in this lab:



DNA and amino acid sequences are forms of “chemical” or molecular evidence.
Similar skeletal structures and organs are considered “anatomical” forms of evidence
(homologous anatomy).
Fossil evidence
I.
Top 10 Vestigial Organs
a. In what ways does the evidence of vestigial structures support evolution?
II.
Exploring Evolution
a. Within the DNA section, whose DNA is the whale DNA most like?
b. Within the skeleton section, which bone structures can help you choose between the
three hypotheses?
c. Why do those structures help you in your decision?
d. Within the fossil section, how does the order of the fossils in the rock layers help you to
choose among the 3 hypotheses?
e. Why does this help you in your decision?
f. What is your final decision?
III.
Evolution of Whales
a. In the DNA section, which DNA is most like the whales?
b. In the mutations section, how do mutations happen?
c. What is the difference between positive, negative, or neutral mutations, and how do they
relate to survival of the fittest?
d. How are mutations similar to gambling?
**You do not have to complete the anatomy section… unless you wish to!
