One Variable Statistics Assignment
Name: _________________
Date: __________________
For this assignment, you will choose a topic that is of interest to you. Be sure that you will be able to find
relevant statistics on your topic so you don’t waste valuable time searching endlessly for information.
The work that you do on this assignment will used to develop your culminating assignment at the end of
the semester.
YOUR ASSIGNMENT MUST INCLUDE ALL OF THE FOLLOWING: (In a duo tang)
I. Introduction
Your topic should be clearly stated and visible on your project.
II. Sampling
a) Include a description of the type of sampling we used and why.
b) Include a description of the population for your project.
III. Bias
a) Indicate if there is any bias in your sample and what type of bias.
b) If there is a bias, indicate how you might change our sampling technique to better represent your
population and avoid the bias.
IV. Data Analysis with Graphs
a) Determine the range of your data and show how you determined what interval length to use.
b) Create a frequency table with the headings:
For Grouped data: Interval, Midpoint (X), Frequency f, Cumulative Frequency, and Relative
Frequency (Leave room for more columns to be added)
c) Draw a Frequency/Relative Frequency Diagram (histogram)
d) Draw a Cumulative Frequency Diagram.
e) You may include other types of graphs to display your data.
V.
Measures of Central Tendency
a) Calculate the mean, median and mode for your grouped data.
b) Identify any possible outliers and if they exist: i) explain why they are outliers.
ii) If eliminated, explain how the measures of
central tendency will change.
VI. Index
Based on your measures of central tendency, create an index that all the data can be compared to.
Justify your choice of index and show examples of data being compared to the index.
VII. Measures of Spread
a) Draw a Box and Whiskers Plot and include:
lowest datum, Q1, Median(Q2), Q3, highest
datum and state the Interquartile Range.
b) Calculate the Standard Deviation of your data using a table with the following headings:
Μ…), (𝒙 βˆ’ 𝒙
Μ…)𝟐 , 𝒇(𝒙 βˆ’ 𝒙
Μ…) 𝟐
For grouped data: Interval, Midpoint (x), Frequency (f), (𝒙 βˆ’ 𝒙
c) Calculate the Z-scores for your data. Find the mean of the Z-scores.
VIII. Summary
Using your data and analysis, draw conclusions about your results with the sample and predict how
they might apply to the population.
IX. Compare and Contrast
ο‚· Compare your results with your partner’s results.
ο‚· Use the graphs, measures of central tendency and measures of spread to compare and contrast the
two sets of data.
ο‚· Suggest reasons for the similarities and differences between the two sets of data.
Evaluation:
Your assignment mark will be based on the attached evaluation sheet.
