The Respiratory System
• Inside Lungs and All The • Full Respiratory System

What Does The Resp. System Do?
• It breathes in oxygen for your cells to work
with as energy.
• It exchanges carbon dioxide, a gas that is
produced by the cells as a waste.
The Nasal Passage and the Openings
• The nasal passage and your mouth is where the
oxygen gets in and the process starts.
The Pharynx and The Larynx
• The pharynx is the passage that leads from the cavities
of the nose and mouth to the larynx. Air passes through
the larynx also known as the voice box and into the
lungs the air they go themselves.
The Esophagus and Epiglottis
• The esophagus is part of
the digestive system but
is part of your
respiratory system too.
It contains the epiglottis,
a flap that separates the
food and the oxygen.
The esophagus delivers
the oxygen from the
neck to the trachea.
(Does not show
epiglottis or esophagus).
The Trachea and Bronchi
• The trachea is a tube that leads to the bronchi which
air journeys through. The bronchi splits into two
tubes which leads to the lungs.
The Lung and The Ribs

The lungs is a major organ of the system and is
needed very much for air inhalation. To prevent it
from being hurt physically on the outside they
have the rib bones for protection.
The Alveoli and Diaphragm

The diaphragm is a muscle that stretches to inhale and exhale air.
The alveoli get the air an the blood with the air gets to go to the
heart but the carbon dioxide goes away forever and then on.
Different Types of Lungs
There are different types of respiratory systems
in different animals. A bird, for example looks like
this-
But a frog’s respiratory looks
like this.
So there are special lungs in animals. There are
a lot more.
How Does the Respiratory System
Interact with Other Systems?

When the oxygen gets to the alveoli it heads
toward the circulatory system to deliver to body
cells and when the blood comes back you
exhale carbon dioxide as waste. It also interacts
in the digestive system by using the esophagus
and the epiglottis to prevent food to go to the
wrong tubes.
How Do You Keep your Respiratory
System Healthy?



Don’t smoke (for adults) and
don’t get second hand
smoking (for children).
Stay out of polluted areas
because you could be
inhaling dangerous
chemicals into your body.
Eat lots of nutrients so your
respiratory system has the
nutrients it needs.
