Spelling Instructional Guide
Course Description

The ECA Kindergarten through 6th Grade Spelling Program has been
designed by the teacher to offer a very thorough study of the Spelling
Process: Phonetic awareness, as well as multiple word study skills are
used. All grades study commonly misspelled words and provide the
teacher to add challenging words from other subject areas.

The 6th grade program correlates spelling with their Latin/Greek
Vocabulary curriculum. The students spelling words are the English
words derived from the Latin/Greek roots learned in vocabulary. This
integration between subjects that complement one another results in
enhanced student learning.
Educational Philosophy
 The K-6 spelling program enables children to write accurately and to
communicate the Gospel clearly in order to become effective
ambassadors for Christ. This program teaches them that proper spelling
is a courtesy to the reader and is necessary in order to convey the writer’s
message clearly (Matthew 28:31)
Grade Overview
 Kindergarten – Spelling Connections for Kindergarten is a systematic and
explicit instructional program that will help students
o develop phonemic awareness
o practice and learn targeted sounds
o understand that spelling is for writing
o build foundational spelling and language skills
- Spelling Connection, Teacher Guide
Spelling concepts are woven into the reading/language program as letters
and sounds are taught. 22 spelling words (taken from the Ayers list) are
introduced and practiced at the end of the year.

First – ACSI’s Purposeful Design spelling program approaches spelling as
a critical literacy skill that strengthens reading and writing ability. Each
spelling strategy has a direct correlation to more effective and efficient
reading and writing.


Second – There are 36 lessons that span the entire year utilizing different
methods proven to help build spelling power. These methods include
phonetic analysis, vocabulary development, learning frequently misspelled
words, and incorporating words into writing.

Third – The third grade spelling curriculum is a program that uses spelling
strategies such as word sorting by phonetic patterns, acquisition of
spelling rule generalizations, and the mastery of high frequency words.
The words are learned through the use of pre-tests, tests, application of
spelling context, writing assignments using the given words and games.

Fourth – Spelling is a vital element of communication enabling us to
correctly express God’s truth. The spelling lists are a compilation of the
words taken from the ACSI fourth grade curriculum. In addition, fourth
graders are expected to learn to spell all fifty states, capitals and
abbreviations. Developing spelling skills will allow students to become
better writers and prepare them for adulthood.

Fifth – Fifth graders are given a pre-test on Mondays and it only counts
for a grade if students earn 100%. Words that re misspelled on the pretest are to be written correctly three times. Students must complete four
workbook pages and a final test is given on Friday.

Sixth – Spelling words are chosen based upon the Latin/Greek
vocabulary words. Students learn the Latin/Greek roots and the
corresponding English words. Students learn word building skills as they
put root words together. Students develop dictionary skills as they go
beyond just learning how to spell a word but also the meaning of the word
and to correctly use the word in a sentence.

Spelling Instructional Guide
Kindergarten
Course Description
 Spelling concepts are woven into the reading/language program. As phonics is
taught, the students realize that the letters make sounds and the sounds are put
together to form words. During the months of April and May, spelling words
(taken from the Ayers list of most commonly used words) and spelling tests are
introduced.
General Objectives
 Apply knowledge of letters and sounds to form simple words phonetically.
