How to Install a Blackboard Compatible Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
If you have any problems with loading Blackboard you will need to update your version of the Java
Runtime Environment. For instance, if you receive an error during the automated browser check,
you will need to update the JRE. The most recent version of the Java JRE (1.6) is compatible with
Blackboard.
These instructions describe how to obtain and install a compatible version of the Java JRE.
1. Navigate to the following website: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
2. After you navigate to this page, scroll down to the section labeled
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0 Update X (select the newest update version):
3. Click Download.
4. You will be redirected to a new webpage to download the Java installer file. Here you will
need to first accept the license agreement before you can download.
5. Once you have agreed to the license, you will be redirected again to a download list. From
this list, select your Operating System and desired type of download. For most people this
will be the Windows Platform and the Online Installation (the online installation usually
take 5 ~10 minutes).
6. Once you have selected your version, you will be prompted to save the install file or run
it. If you choose to ‘Run’ the file, installation will begin immediately. If you choose to ‘Save’
the file, you will need to run the installer manually (by double -clicking on the file) after you
have downloaded it to our computer.
7. Since the simplest thing to do is to click ‘Run’, the remainder of these instructions will be
based on that option.
8. After clicking ‘Run’ the installer will begin. You will be prompted after a few seconds to
verify that you want to install the Java JRE. Click ‘Run’.
9. Once the installation has finished, you will be prompted to ‘Finish’, exiting the installer:
After completing this step you may be required to restart your browser. Once you have done this, a
Blackboard compatible Java JRE has been installed successfully on your computer.
