FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Sara Szeglowski [email protected] 716.536.1619 Local yoga teacher to speak at Symposium on Yoga Therapy and Research in Washington, DC June 1, 2016 (Hamburg, NY) –Village of Hamburg yoga studio owner, Sara Szeglowski, has been asked by the Association of International Yoga Therapists to present on June 9th at the organization’s three day symposium, which will be held in the Washington, D.C. area. Szeglowski, who teaches yoga classes, workshops, and provides private yoga therapy sessions at Shine Yoga on Main Street in the Village of Hamburg, will speak on the role yoga plays in improving the lives of young, female cancer survivors who are juggling career and family responsibilities while dealing with the physical and emotional aftermath of cancer diagnosis and treatment. Her presentation draws from her own experience as a cancer survivor, her expeience providing therapeutic yoga to other survivors and work she has done with Roswell Park Cancer Institute. “Over the course of the year I was actively fighting my cancer with chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery I received a tremendous amount of support and guidance. In fact, it was the most mapped out time in my life. When that year ended, the map was gone along with my cancer. What remained was intense fear of a recurrence, a deep level of exhaustion, pain and both mental and physical limitations. I didn’t know how to get back to my life, which included a toddler and a demanding job,” said Szeglowski. “I’ve been able to create a map for myself and help the clients I work with take back control of their lives and bodies, but speaking at an international conference focused on bringing yoga into medical settings takes my vision for young cancer survivors to a whole new level. My greatest hope is that I will be able to contribute to a medical system that provides consistant, ongoing survivorship support and resources as a matter of course. This conference is a step towards making that happen. I’m excited to make a contribution and to bring back what I learn to my studio and to Western New York.” In addition to supporting survivors through her studio, Szeglowski has worked with Roswell Park Cancer Institute to develop a yoga video for active cancer patients and is working on a second video for survivors. She also works with the YMCA’s Live Strong Program in Williamsville and the Breast Cancer Network of Western New York. Szeglowski is the only certified Yoga4Cancer teacher in Western New York. Szeglowski is a 200 hr Yoga Alliance registered yoga teacher, trained through Kripalu’s intensive month long program and is working towards a 500 hour certification through Tiffany Cruikshank’s Yoga Medicine program. She is trained by Cruikshank in Spinal Disfunction (more) Therapy and will complete Shoulder and Facia moduals this summer. Szeglowski is a member of the Kripalu Yoga Teacher Association and the Association of International Yoga Therapists. Shine Yoga’s approach for both cancer survivors and “every body” centers around individualized, safe, instructional yoga that teaches students to use all the muscles in their body to improve flexibility and strength. Each week, classes explore a specific body system (hips, shoulders, lumbar spine) using specially designed sequences to strengthen small supportive muscles and release tension. Every class is different. Shine clases are small by design, providing individualized attention and asists to no more than 16 students per class. A key component of the Shine approach is to offer individual, one-on-one sessions as part of students’ practices in addition to regular classes and workshops.
