7.6B distinguish between physical and chemical changes in matter in the digestive system
7.7B illustrate the transformation of energy within an organism such as the transfer from chemical energy to heat energy and thermal energy in digestion
7.6C recognize how large molecules are broken down into smaller molecules, such as carbohydrates can be broken down into sugars
Digestive Process Notes
The digestive system is responsible for breaking down foods, absorbing
nutrients, and excreting wastes. The digestive process begins in the mouth.
Chewing is an example of a physical change because the food molecules stay the
same, just get smaller. Saliva in the mouth begins to chemically change the food
into a new substance.
Food enters the body as a macromolecule. A macromolecule is a very large
molecule that is made of smaller molecules linked together. Proteins and
carbohydrates are examples of macromolecules. Macromolecules are broken into
smaller molecules that can be used by cells. This process is a chemical change
since a new substance is being formed.
Several sugars linked together create a carbohydrate. Chewing a cracker is an
example of a carbohydrate being broken down into sugars in the mouth. The
sugar glucose is the source of energy for cells.
Another example of a macromolecule is a protein. Proteins are broken down in
the stomach into basic units called amino acids. Amino acids join together in
different arrangements to make different types of proteins. Your body can
produce some amino acids but others must be obtained from the food we eat.
Energy transformations occur during the digestive process. When food is
broken down, the body transfers energy from chemical energy to thermal and
mechanical energy. Chemical energy is potential energy stored in the food we
eat. The human body uses thermal energy to maintain body temperature.
Mechanical energy allows movement in the body, such as the heart beating,
muscles moving, and moving food through the digestive system.
