TRAINING OPPORTUNITY
Topic:
BONES IN THE FIELD
(Determining the Difference Between Human and Non-human Skeletal Remains)
This presentation begins with a short course in human skeletal anatomy, so that participants will be better
equipped to determine the nature of skeletal remains found in the field. A hands-on approach will be used to
familiarize search and rescue personnel with the anthropological techniques used to determine whether or not
the bones belonged to a human. Veronica is a very entertaining instructor and I am sure everyone will learn
and enjoy her class.
Instructor: Dr. Nici Vance, Oregon State Police Forensic Laboratory
Dr. Vance has served as a forensic scientist at the Oregon State Police Forensic Laboratory for more
than 12 years, primarily in the field of forensic biology. She analyzes physical evidence found at the
scene of violent crimes and high-profile cases, and also works as a crime scene analyst on the OSP
crime scene response team. Working as a liaison between the lab and the State Medical Examiner’s
Office as a forensic anthropologist, she has recovered and identified skeletal remains found throughout
the state since 1997. Dr. Vance is a member of the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team, the
physical anthropology section of the IAI and the Society of Forensic Anthropologists. She also works
as an adjunct professor at Clark College in Vancouver, Washington. In addition to degrees in
Anthropology from the University of Montana and Portland State University, she holds a PhD in skeletal
anatomy from the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
