Ground Tissue
What is Ground Tissue?
• Ground Tissue is simple non-meristematic
tissue (non-dividing tissue) made up 3 cell
types: paranenchyma, collenchyma and
sclerenchyma.
What’s special about Ground Tissue?
• Ground tissue is special because it is needed
for food intake. It’s also special because it
provides the leaves of a plant with
mesophyll and without the plant wouldn’t
be able to repair any of it’s wounds.
3 Cell Types
• Parenchyma, the most abundant ground tissue, consists
of thin-walled, metabolically active cells that carry out a
variety of functions in the plant, including photosynthesis
and storage .
• Collenchyma tissue is composed of narrow, elongated
cells with thick primary walls. Collenchyma cells provide
structural support to the growing plant body.
• Sclerenchyma consists of two types of cells, sclereids and
fibers Both have thick secondary walls and are frequently
dead at maturity. Sclereids occur in a variety of shapes,
ranging from roughly spherical to branched, and are
widely distributed throughout the plant.
What does it do?
• Ground tissue is responsible for storing
carbohydrates , produced by the plant, it lies
between the vascular and dermal tissue.
• The major cells of the ground tissue have thin
walls, many chloroplasts and large vacuoles,
and they form the mass leaves, stems and
roots.
• Many different functions are performed by
ground tissue including photosynthesis,
storage, and support
