AP Biology Discussion Notes
Friday 11/21/2014
Goals for the Day
• Be able to identify each phase of the cell
cycle
• Be able to work cohesively in groups
• Be able to understand mitosis & meiosis
Keys to success in Mitosis Lab
• Notes out with your pictures of the cycles
• Read carefully
• Follow directions
• Work cooperatively (ex. Take turns counting &
tallying) – Don’t let one person do all the work!
Learn Something!
Keys to success in Mitosis Lab
• Count 100 cells (minimum) with the slides AND
Count 3 cards
• Make an overall total for your group
• Enter group totals into class data
• Calculate Percentage of cells counted in each
phase and Time in Each stage using GROUP
TOTAL AND CLASS TOTAL
– (split column in 2)
– % of cells in the stage X 1440 minutes = number of
minutes in the stage
Microscope Reminders
• Begin on Low Power
• Adjust the light with
the diaphragm as
needed
• Move to medium,
focus, then move to
high power
Keys to success in Mitosis Lab
• Calculate Percentage of cells counted in each
phase and Time in Each stage using CLASS
TOTAL
• Calculate % of cells counted using the number
counted and the total cells counted
• Make pie graph from overall CLASS DATA
• Continue working on online lab
Species of the day 11/21/2014
• Daffodil
Species of the day 11/21/2014
• Daffodil
• Make a prediction –
– Grow or Rot?
– Deformed/Normal?
