Warm-up Questions:
• During what phase of the cell
cycle is DNA replicated to
prepare for mitosis?
• On average, how much time
does a cell spend in mitosis
during the cell cycle?

CANCER AND CELL CYCLE
• Cancer is caused by
unregulated cell growth.
Cancer is not contagious. However,
people can be genetically more likely
to develop cancer.
Most cells spend a much greater
amount of time in interphase and
not duplicating.
WHEN THE CELL CYCLE GOES WRONG
Checkpoints along the cell cycle verify
that cells are finishing each step in the
cycle properly. If a cell does not pass a
checkpoint, it will destroy itself
(apoptosis). This ensures that you have
healthy, properly functioning cells.
Cancer cells ignore these
checkpoints and grow rapidly and
separate far more frequently than
they should. The build up of cells is
when tumors form.
Cancer cells are cells that have lost
their ability to control their rate of
mitosis.
