GASTRIC EMPTYING SCAN (GNH Only) Approved by: Senior Manager, Diagnostic Imaging Diagnostic Imaging Policy & Procedures Manual Number: VIII-150 Date Effective July 1, 2015 Next Review (3 years from Effective Date) July 2018 Purpose To diagnose slow gastric emptying due to gastric outlet obstruction or reduced gastric motility utilizing ingestion of a radiopharmaceutical. The examination requires four hours to perform. Applicability This policy and procedure applies to Covenant Health Edmonton Acute Care facilities, patient care provider staff and physicians. Procedure Duration Imaging will take 1.75 hours to perform. Booking Procedure 1. By the Nursing Unit or attending physician or designate. 2. Must be booked in advance (minimum one day). 3. Generate an order using electronic order entry system. Indicate pertinent history, patient allergies, infection precautions, if patient is diabetic, has renal insufficiency or any other special care requirements. 4. Ensure the patient has had no other Nuclear Medicine procedures scheduled within 48 hours preceding following this examination. 5. Ensure the patient has not had an x-ray examination (abdomen) involving the use of barium in the preceding 48 hours. 6. Ensure the patient has had no motility or opiate medication for 48 hours prior to exam. Preparation The attending physician should explain the procedure to the patient. If the patient requires an interpreter, the nursing unit will make arrangements for Interpretive Services to be available for the procedure. The nursing unit will then advise Diagnostic Imaging that these arrangements have been made. a) Nothing to eat or drink from 2400 hours the day preceding the examination. b) If patient has diabetes, please inform Nuclear Medicine Department. c) Ensure the patient's chart is complete with Doctor’s orders, history of allergy and pertinent history. This must accompany the patient to the Nuclear Medicine Department. d) Transportation as warranted by patient condition.
