An Interactive Annotated Bibliography (IAB) to Optimize Care and Safety of Respiratory Patients •Bob Demers, BS RRT RCP FAARC FCCP •Patrick Moore, BHA RRT RCP •Richard Ford, BS RRT FAARC Presented by Richard Ford Administrative Specialist UC San Diego Health Poster/Handout The Issue The current medical care delivery landscape have increase the pressures exerted upon healthcare provider organizations to decrease costs. The avoidance and reduction in costs often target the number of Respiratory Care Practitioners made available to provide care to patients with pulmonary impairments. The CSRC Standards of Staffing (SOS) initiative was created with the aim of developing a Position Statement that is credible, convincing, and supported by medical evidence to guide decision makers in when RCPs should be employed and the number required to insure safe and appropriate care. CSRC Standards of Staffing Team • • • • • • • Patrick Moore Michael Madison Robert Demers Robert Bence Jeffery Davis Carol Mihailuk Richard Ford Opinion of the Team • We contend that the delivery of care to certain patients with pulmonary disease by care providers other than RCPs is not only undesirable, but downright dangerous. • How do you educate others with compelling evidence that RCPs are the most competent, efficient, effective, and valued care givers. • Must be supported by citations aimed at demonstrating the value of staffing plans in which competent caregivers make a difference, can reduce expenses, can improve outcomes, and provide a safer environment. Educating Decision Makers: Most Value in Least Amount of Time • Executive Leadership • You have 5 minutes on the agenda • You have 1 minutes to get them interested • Don’t create more work • Least is better • Data driven, evidence based • Easy and meaningful Lead to the design of an Interactive Annotated Bibliography (IAB) Too Much to Do- There’s and App for That http://www.csrc.org/resources/Documents/Annotated%20Bib.pdf A Bibliography • The “signature trait” of a bibliography: enormous credibility • The SOS bibliography is comprised of over 40 peer-reviewed publications....resulting in a collection of monographs written and endorsed by literally scores of experts • The title of a paper might only hint at the results of a clinical study • Ideally, it would be optimal if inspectors of the bibliography could read each reference in its’ entirety Why Annotate? • A readers often skim only the abstract of a published paper, in order to ascertain its’ “take-home message” • The Annotated Bibliography is used in order to provide a “high-altitude” (moderately granular) view of a collection of references • The Interactive Bibliography allows the interested reader to “drill down” on another piece, on the basis of that paper’s annotated description • Consequently, an Interactive Annotated Bibliography respects the time constraints of the readers, while enhancing their awareness of the bibloghraphys contents The CSRC SOS Initiative • If we wish to protect patients from the hazards of unsafe staffing, it behooves us to create persuasive, comprehensive, and authoritative tools targeted to administrators and managers of extended-care facilities who might be oblivious to the adverse results of that practice • Our IAB is designed to provide a potent disincentive for managers to assign a non-RCP to a patient who may have been diagnosed with a respiratory disorder that requires the unique skillset that credentialled RCPs possess • It is currently available to you now www.csrc.org/resources/Documents/Annotated%20Bib.pdf Acknowledgements: The astute and insightful assistance Patrick Moore BHA, RRT, RCP and to Robert Demers BS, RRT, RCP, FAARC, FCCP in the creation of the AIB and contributions to this presentation is gratefully acknowledged. The participation of the CSRC Ad Hoc Committee to Promote Safe Staffing proved to be indispensible in the formulation of the IAB concept. www.csrc.org/resources/Documents/Annotated%20Bib.pdf 21
