Chapter 1 Cell Function and Structure
Section 1 Discovering Cells
Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in all living organisms. All cells contain all the necessary
materials needed to allow the cell to live and function. Almost all cells are small in size.
Robert Hooke- An English scientist who was one of the first people to observe cells with his homemade
microscope in 1663. He observed cork cells. The word “cell” in Latin means tiny rooms.
Anton van Leeuwenhoek- A Dutch business man who made mircroscopes in his spare time. Around
1673 he was looking at some pond scum where he discovered the first micro organisms that he called
“animalcules”.
Schleiden- A German scientist that concluded that all plants were made of cells in 1838.
Schwann- A German scientist that concluded that all animals were made of cell in 1839 and came up
with the first two parts of the cell theory.
Virchow- A German doctor who created the third part of the cell theory in 1855.
Cell Theory:
1. All living organisms are composed of 1 or more cells
2. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in all living organisms
3. All cells are produced from other cells
