About Deaf Basketball Australia
Deaf Basketball Australia (DBA) is the peak body for deaf and hard of
hearing basketball players in Australia.
DBA has been in existence since 1964, and is administered by a
volunteer Board, and assisted by state associations.
The coaching staff of DBA, ensure that Australia is represented by the best deaf and hard of
hearing basketball players at each international tournament. These include:



Deaflympic Games
World Championships
Asia Pacific Deaf Games (doubles as Deaflympic qualifiers)
National men and women teams compete in these tournaments every 4 years. The World
Championships and Deaflympics are held 2 years apart, in various parts of the world. The
Asia Pacific Deaf Games can be held up to 1 year prior to the Deaflympics.
The coaching structure shown below, is supported by the Board and the state bodies.

DBA works in association with the following organisations to achieve its aims.




Deaf Sports Australia (DSA)
International Committee of the Sports of the Deaf (ICSD)
Deaf International Basketball Association (DIBF)
Basketball Australia (BA)
Position Details

Each position in DBA is a voluntary role, and does not receive financial remuneration
form DBA. All efforts will be taken to ensure that costs are minimised for the
successful applicant

Camps are held approximately every 3 months in different states in years not
associated with international tournaments

Camps are usually held monthly in the years of the event.

Coaches may be required to assist with any development programs or initiatives held
in conjunction with National training camps

Learned knowledge of the deaf and hard of hearing individuals’ needs is required.

Coaching staff not proficient in Auslan, will be required to undertake courses to
increase their proficiency

Coaching staff are required to assist in creating a culture of elite athleticism amongst
deaf and hard of hearing athletes and strive to attain No. 1 status in the world.

DBA will assist coaching staff in advancing their coaching and technical skills where
possible.

Roles and Responsibilities
The Head Coach is responsible for producing the best possible team with the players
selected. Recruitment and identification of players around the country is the responsibility of
the DBA Board.
The position is advertised with a four-year tenure, subject to annual performance reviews.
This position also provides leadership of the Assistant Coach, and co-operation with the
Team Manager. The tenure ends in December after the Deaflympics, which in this case is
December 2017.
The Head Coach will provide the role of trainer, mentor, tactician and educator to players
selected for the Australian training squads. Training will be under the guidelines of due
fairness, equity and firmness. In association with the Assistant Coach and Team Manager,
regular reports will be provided to the DBA Board, the national team selection panel and the
players, regarding the progress of players throughout the program.
The Head Coach will also sit on the national team selection panel, providing expert advice to
the selection process.
In cases of breach of discipline by players, the coach will form part of the initial disciplinary
committee with the Team Manager, and administer a fair and just action. If the case is
severe in nature, the coach may refer the incident to the DBA Board for action. Details of the
Code of Conduct are a separate attachment.
Application Process
Applications can be made in writing and include the appropriate application form. All details
must be completed on the form, including any medical certificates or delegations
The applicant is required to provide a written explanation of the reasons for application,
indicating specific areas in which the applicant can assist the national team.
All applications must be received in full prior to the closing date as advertised.
Applications after this date are subject to individual consideration by the DBA Board.

Strong leadership skills

Strong desire to foster Deaf Basketball in Australia

Level 2 Coaching Certificate for Basketball
Experience in coaching deaf athletes
Experience in High Performance Pathways for Athletes
Experience in identification and fostering of Elite Athletes
Fluent Auslan user
First Aid Certificate
Experience in sports management
Previous coaching experience in a National/State Levels
Selection Process
All applicants for the position will be interviewed by the Selection Panel established by the
DBA Board. This panel will consist of 2 members of the Board, and will include a guest panel
member.
All applicants will be advised the result of their application in writing within 14 days of
interview date.
Any appeal of the Selection Panels decision must be referred to the DBA President, in
writing, within 7 days of receipt of the decision.

Code of Conduct
Nomination for any position within the National Teams
Program requires adherence and acceptance of the following rules:




The use/possession of prohibited drugs is not permitted
Excessive use of alcohol is not permitted
Smoking within training/game situations is prohibited
Agree to submit to any Anti-doping test or requirements as set out by the relevant
authorities
 Any dissent or abusive behaviour to any player or official is not permitted
 Any illegal act under state or federal laws is prohibited
 Compliance with the Anti-Discrimination Laws of 1991
In addition to the above rules it is also agreed:  All reasonable requests made by DBA Board members and/ or tournament officials
will be complied with
 Disruptive or condescending behaviour will not be tolerated
 Appropriate attire must be worn at all times – there is a dress code to be followed
 Reasonable assistance will be provided for promotional requirements
