Barry Ware wins Peninsula Classic for a second time!
The 25th Peninsula Classic was held at Kennick reservoir on 12 June 2016. The bank event,
sponsored by Fly Fishing Tackle of Crediton (www.fly-fishing-tackle.co.uk) was well supported with 22
anglers turning out all hoping for the top prize of a 2017 season ticket at a lake of their choice.
Conditions looked very favourable with cloud cover and slight ripple on the water. There were a huge
amount of fish showing in front of the fishing lodge as the draw was made at 9am. After the draw, and
a cup of tea or coffee, anglers dispersed to one of four zones around the reservoir with two hours of
fishing in each zone being the format.
There were fish caught almost straight away but very few as conditions changed during the day with
stronger winds, some showers, and spells of bright sunshine in the afternoon really putting the fish off
the feed. There was a large hatch of Coch-y-Bondhu beetles hitting the water as well as some
damsels throughout the day with fish showing all-round the lake at different distances from the bank.
It didn’t seem to matter what imitation was presented to the fish, they simply were not interested and
the fishing was very challenging!
When the final klaxon sounded at 5:30pm all the anglers weighed in at the lodge and enjoyed a hot
pasty and drinks.
During the presentations each anglers was presented with a fly box donated by Howard Thresher
from Fly Fishing Tackle. Former winner Barry Ware Jnr won the event catching five of the eight fish
limit including a cracking Blue Trout of over 2lbs. Rob Gale banked four fish to finish second with
2015 winner Jeremy Summers finishing third with three fish. Here are the top five finishers:
1st Barry ware Jnr with 5 fish for 9lbs 3oz winning a South West Lakes Trust season permit for 2917 at
a lake of his choice
2nd Rob Gale with 4 fish for 7lb 11oz winning a £50 Fly Fishing Tackle voucher and a boat permit from
South West Lakes Trust
3rd Jeremy Summers 3 fish for 5lbs 7oz winning a £30 voucher for Fly Fishing Tackle and a boat
permit from South West Lakes Trust
4th Andrew Gooding 3 fish for 5lb 2oz winning a £20 Fly Fishing Tackle voucher and a boat permit
from South West Lakes Trust
5th Alec Hoare with 2 fish for 4lbs winning a £10 Fly Fishing Tackle voucher and a boat permit from
South West Lakes Trust
The largest three fish automatically qualified for the £5000 Best of the Best final at Wimbleball lake on
18th September. Those were Rob Gale 2lb 3oz, Barry ware Jnr 2lb 2oz, Alec Hoare and John Walker
2lb each
In total 40 fish were caught with 18 Rainbows, 8 Blue and 14 Brown trout giving a rod average of 1.82
per person. The largest fish was 2lb 3oz caught by Rob Gale.
Congratulations go to Barry Ware and my thanks to Howard Thresher from Fly Fishing Tackle for
supporting the event and to Mark and Kit the wardens for their help on the day and in preparation
before the event.
